Universal design means ensuring people have access not only to spaces, but also to information, services and opportunities that help them reach their goals.

When it comes to our performance assessments, advanced testing and assessment technologies help athletes better understand their athletic levels. Highlights include:
- Accessible, state-of-the-art performance testing equipment
- Sport-specific testing for adapted and non-adapted sports
- Experts with specialized knowledge of disability and adapted sports

When organizations think about universal design, it's important to consider not only physical access but also equitable access to performance, health and wellness resources. The more people who can participate, the stronger our communities become.

Universal design isn't just about access. It's about independence, participation and creating spaces where people can fully engage.

Our Nutrition Lab at SSPC demonstrates how thoughtful design can make learning and performance nutrition more accessible. Features include:

- Accessible roll-under cooktops, microwaves and ovens
- Motorized, height-adjustable countertops
- Adaptive kitchen tools such as as rocker knives, bowl stabilizers and food choppers
- Registered dietitians with expertise in sport performance nutrition and developing individualized nutrition strategies for people with disabilities

These solutions aren't limited to our facility. Schools, workplaces, community centers and homes can all benefit from choices that increase usability for more people.

Universal design is all about creating spaces that work for the widest range of people possible; not as an afterthought, but as part of the design.

At SSPC, our Strength & Conditioning and Rest & Recovery spaces are intentionally created to support the full training experience. What does that look like?

- Accessible, high-performance equipment from industry-leading manufacturers
- A spacious layout (over 2,300 square feet) to ensure all athletes have room to maneuver
- A focus on rest and recovery, which we believe is integral to success
- Trainers with expertise in adapted sports, accessibility and disability-specific performance considerations

Universal design benefits everyone, and spaces that consider a variety of abilities from the start can create better experiences for all. Learn more about SSPC's training and recovery spaces at lakeshore.org/sspc-spaces

July is Disability Pride Month!

With this year's theme, "The World Works Better With Us," we're reminded of Lakeshore SSPC's goal: to provide all athletes, disabled and non-disabled, with an unrivaled training experience. In honor of this month's theme, we'll be highlighting universal design in our SSPC spaces and how it benefits everyone who comes through our doors to train. Stay tuned!
