Most AAC courses are built around the same standards.

Same objectives, same core content, even the same textbook in many programs.

So why do so many SLPs leave feeling unprepared?

This study made me think about that disconnect. If we’re learning similar things, then the difference probably isn’t just what is being taught.

It’s how it’s applied, practiced, and what happens after.

Because learning something in a class and actually using it in a session are two very different things.

What helped you go from learning about AAC to actually feeling confident using it?

Did you have any AAC clients during your clinic rotations in grad school?

Research says “AAC training is effective”…okay, so what’s the problem?

A lot of training focuses on how to implement a strategy, but not always on how to make clinical decisions.

We’re being taught what to do, but not always how to decide what to do.

And that’s where things start to feel harder in real practice.

What kind of AAC training has actually helped you feel more confident in your clinical decisions?

How do you take your CEUs?

AAC is a huge part of what we do as SLPs,
but for a lot of us, it didn’t feel that way in grad school.

This review pulled from 31 studies on AAC training, and the pattern is pretty clear:
training exists, but it doesn’t always translate into real-world readiness.

So clinicians end up figuring it out in real time through workshops, CEUs, on-the-job experience, and basic trial and error.

Because the training didn’t fully prepare us for what our caseloads actually look like.

And that gap is something a lot of SLPs have felt. Do you feel like your AAC training actually prepared you for your caseload today?
