Sometimes the hardest part of returning to movement after an injury isn’t the tissue.
It’s trusting the tissue again.

Pain and injury can teach the brain to associate certain movements with danger. So even after the body has regained enough capacity, you may still avoid the movement that initially caused the injury.

That avoidance makes sense. It’s a protective response.

But if we never give someone the opportunity to safely move, load, and experience success, we never give them the opportunity to rebuild that trust.

As clinicians, our job isn’t to tell every patient to “push through.”

It’s to help them understand:

• What their body can tolerate
• What movements are appropriate right now
• How to progressively increase load
• What sensations are expected vs. concerning
• And how to regain confidence in their body

Sometimes the intervention a patient needs most isn’t another restriction.

It’s a well-timed:

“You can move. Let’s figure out how.”

If you’re dealing with pain and wondering if you’ll ever be able to return to doing the things you love, let us help.

Weighted Hip Mobility 🥇

If you’re constantly battling tight hips with passive stretching it might be time to try adding some load.

Here are 3 great ways to mobilize your hips in ways you likely haven’t tried:

1. Weighted Hip Airplanes - These target rotation of the hip joint and help to both mobilize and strengthen the lateral hip.

2. Weighted Adductor RDL - These target the adductor muscles in the inside of the thigh that is elevated on the bench.

3. Tempo Bulgarian Split Squat - These target the hip flexor and quad on the back leg that is anchored on the bench and provide a great eccentric load to really open up the front of the hip.

Stay mobile friends 👊🏻

You’ve got to find the one that works best for you and for your goals.

Two ways to modify your exercise when dealing with pain or injury ✌️

1️⃣ Reduce the Range of Motion

-This allows you to still move heavier loads while avoiding the painful range of motion

2️⃣ Reduce the Load and Perform Tempo Reps with a 3-5 second eccentric

- This allows you to still achieve a challenging stimulus and build control through the range of motion.

3 Reasons PT Didn’t Work For You 🤷🏼‍♂️

1. You weren’t challenged

- Simply put, your rehab was too easy or focused too heavily on passive treatments. If you’re an athlete or highly active individual then your rehab needs to challenge your tissues in a way that will prepare you to handle to loads encountered in your sport or activity.

2. You weren’t consistent

- It doesn’t work if you don’t do the work. To create lasting change you need to be consistent with your homework and with your sessions. This allows you and your PT to continue to assess, modify, and progress your plan to ensure you are moving in the right direction or pivot if you aren’t.

3. You stopped when the pain was gone

I know this one sounds like BS but just because you aren’t feeling better doesn’t guarantee that your tissues are ready to meet the demands of your sport or activity. We see this scenario all too frequently. You get injured, you come to PT, you start feeling better, then you go right back to the same intensity of activity that you didn’t when you got injured. This leads to a continuous cycle of injury, pain, and missed time doing what you love. Getting out of pain is the first piece in the puzzle. Making sure it never returns is the real magic.

Any of this reasons feel familiar?

If so, it might be time to try a different approach.
