πŸ“’ Free Webinar: CF Billing Compliance β€” June 25 at 7 PM ET

If you supervise a Clinical Fellow, assistant, or graduate student, this is important.

ASHA is hosting a free webinar on June 25, 2026 at 7 PM Eastern covering billing compliance for CFs, assistants, and graduate students. The core message: before billing under your NPI for services provided by another clinician, you must verify that your payer explicitly permits it. This is not a new requirement, and it is not ASHA policy β€” it applies across all healthcare professions. Clinicians who bill without payer permission have faced audits and recoupments.

πŸ’™ Aphasia Awareness Month πŸ’™
This month, PSHA recognizes Aphasia Awareness Month and raises awareness about a communication disorder that affects a person’s ability to speak, understand, read, and writeβ€”most often after stroke or brain injury.
Speech-language pathologists play a vital role in helping individuals with aphasia reconnect through communication, participation, and meaningful life activities. With the right support, people with aphasia can continue to learn, work, and engage with their communities.
Let’s spread awareness, reduce stigma, and advocate for access to comprehensive communication care. πŸ—£οΈπŸ’ͺ

Member Spotlight Monday 🌟

One last spotlight to close out Better Speech-Language Hearing Month.

This one goes to the professionals working in medical settings, navigating complex caseloads, and advocating for their patients with limited resources and increasing administrative burdens. Meet Erin Buckwalter, our current Past President. Erin is a medical SLP and supervisor at Penn Medicine. Erin has worked tirelessly on improving working conditions for medical SLP's.

Healthcare-based SLPs and audiologists often work in some of the most demanding environments in medicine. ICUs, rehabilitation centers, oncology units, skilled nursing facilities β€” settings where communication disorders intersect with serious illness, and where the SLP or audiologist may be the person who gives a patient their voice back after surgery, illness, or injury.

The reimbursement pressures are real. The caseloads are heavy. The emotional weight is significant. And yet, these professionals show up every day because the work matters.

PSHA sees you. We're advocating for better Medicaid payment rates, better telehealth access, and professional protections that make sustainable healthcare-based practice possible. Thnk you Erin for everything you do to advocate for our profession and clients.

If you're a medical SLP or audiologist in Pennsylvania: thank you. PSHA is your professional home. Visit psha.org to connect with us.

🌟 Member Spotlight: Better Speech & Hearing Month 🌟
This month, we're celebrating the incredible professionals who make communication possible every day! πŸ’¬πŸ‘‚

Meet: Susan L. Dillmuth-Miller, AuD

✨ Why did you choose this field?
At summer camp in middle school, I played basketball with a team of Deaf girls. This experience sparked my interest in sign language and hearing technology β€” and the rest is history.

πŸ’‘ What does Better Speech & Hearing Month mean to you?
This month is our opportunity as professionals to raise awareness about speech and hearing disorders, prevention, and treatment. Most audiologists and SLPs enter the field because they or a loved one has benefited from services. This month gives us extra incentive to make our fields visible and accessible to those who are not yet aware.

❀️ A moment that reminds you why you love what you do:
I worked in a hospital diagnosing infants and toddlers, then as an educational audiologist K-12, and now at the university level. To see university students who I diagnosed at birth be successful in their chosen careers β€” and not limited by their auditory issues β€” is incredibly rewarding.

πŸ—£οΈ One thing you wish people understood about communication or hearing health:
The impact of an auditory issue is situational. If the speaker is looking away, I may not understand you. If there is competing noise, I may not understand you. If I am unfamiliar with the content, I may not understand you.

🌱 A tip for supporting speech, language, or hearing wellness:
Set your personal listening device volume to a comfortable level in quiet β€” and don't raise the volume when in competing noise.

β˜• Quick Hits:
β€’ Favorite therapy resource: Cochlear, Med-El, and Advanced Bionics β€” great auditory listening therapy tools for those with hearing loss and APD
β€’ Coffee or tea: Both!
β€’ Early bird or night owl: Depends on the day
β€’ Go-to self-care: Running

πŸ‘ Help us celebrate Susan in the comments!
