The words of this child speaking to Reuters following the shooting in San Diego weighs heavy on the hearts of every pediatrician. No child should have to witness gun violence or carry the trauma of violence into a classroom. Children deserve to go to school without the threat of shootings and without associating going to school with fear, lockdowns, or loss.

As pediatricians, we know that exposure to violence - whether experienced firsthand or repeatedly seen on screens - can have lasting effects on children’s mental and emotional health.

Gun violence is a serious threat to the health and safety of children and teens and AAP will continue to advocate for evidence-based policies that protect young people and help ensure every child can learn, gather at school, and grow without fear.
