If your cardio feels too easy, it might be time to turn it up a notch. 👟💨

For cardiovascular exercise to improve your fitness, it should challenge your heart and lungs. That doesn't mean pushing to exhaustion, but it does mean getting your breathing up, breaking a sweat and stepping outside your comfort zone.

The goal is to help your body adapt, grow stronger and improve endurance over time.

Need help building an exercise plan that's right for you? Our team can help.💙

Meet Matt Bakken 👋 Physical Therapist | Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist | North Fargo

Matt loves the small-town feel of the North Fargo community — getting to know the people he works with every day and being part of something that feels personal and connected.

His approach to care is active and hands-on in the best way. Rather than relying on passive treatments, Matt prioritizes education, movement, strength training and progressive loading to help patients understand their bodies and take ownership of their recovery. His goal is to build confidence through movement and create lasting results.

Matt is especially passionate about helping people cut through the noise and misinformation around pain, exercise and movement. One thing he wishes more people knew? Pain doesn’t always equal damage, and movement is often part of the solution, not something to avoid.

Outside of work, Matt enjoys playing golf and pickleball, and you’ll often find him watching UND hockey. 🏒

Fun fact: he’s been to the Masters Tournament in Augusta, Georgia ⛳
Instant mood-boost: A round of golf on a nice summer morning ☀️

Say hi to Matt next time you’re in North Fargo — he’s here to help you move with confidence!

Pickleball is one of the best activities you can do for your balance.🏓

Every lunge, pivot, quick stop and change of direction challenges your body to react, stabilize and recover. Those same skills are incredibly important when it comes to preventing falls.

Think about it: when you trip or lose your balance, your body has to react quickly to catch itself. Activities like pickleball help train that reaction time, coordination, agility and balance in a way that walking alone simply can't.

The result? Better movement, greater confidence and a lower risk of falls as you age.

Want to get into pickleball but not feeling quite ready? Talk to us! Our physical therapists can help improve your strength, balance, mobility and confidence so you're prepared for your first match.

When most people think about biking, they think about cardiovascular health.🚴

But cycling can do a lot more than strengthen your heart.

Staying upright on a bike challenges your core, stimulates your vestibular system, improves reaction time and helps your body navigate changing environments. Research has even shown that adults who cycle regularly tend to have better balance and a lower risk of falls later in life.

Whether you're riding around the neighborhood or hitting the trails, you're doing more for your body than you might realize.

Have you been out on your bike yet this season?🚴

A fall or near fall isn’t just “part of getting older.” It’s often your body’s way of telling you something needs attention.

If you’re feeling unsteady, getting dizzy when standing up, avoiding activities you used to do or noticing everyday tasks becoming harder, physical therapy can help.

At Total Balance, you’ll work one-on-one with a Doctor of Physical Therapy during hour-long sessions focused entirely on you, your goals and your daily life. From balance and strength training to gait training, transfers and fall recovery strategies, we help you move more safely and confidently.

Sometimes the best thing you can do is get ahead of the problem before a serious fall happens.

Bladder leaks, urgency, straining, constantly feeling like you need to go… these things may be common, but they’re not something you just have to “live with.”

Pelvic floor therapy often involves habit changes that can make a big difference over time, helping improve the connection between your brain, bladder and pelvic floor so your body can function more efficiently.

And yes — tools like a Squatty Potty can actually help!

If bladder urgency, leakage or pelvic floor symptoms are impacting your daily life, our team is here to help with personalized, one-on-one care focused on long-term improvement.
