Developed by Greenville Health System (GHS), Medical Experience Academy (MedEx) is a premier pipeline program during the summer for rising high school seniors to college students who are interested in a healthcare career. MedEx students have the opportunity to shadow physicians, attend interactive lectures about a variety of health topics, participate in research projects, practice medical school entrance tests and interviews, and develop interpersonal and leadership skills.

💙 A Day of Learning, Growth, and Purpose 💙

Today, our Tier II and Tier IV MedEx Academy interns spent the day learning side-by-side, leaning on one another as they explored the realities of healthcare and the responsibility that comes with serving others.

A special thank you to every presenter who poured into our students today. From Child Life Services and meal preparation to Growth Year opportunities and discussions surrounding health disparities, our interns were challenged to think beyond the clinic and consider the many factors that impact patient outcomes.

Key takeaways:

✨ Empathy as an Intervention – Meeting community needs directly builds deeper clinical empathy.

✨ Understanding Social Dynamics – Exposure to diverse communities helps future caregivers recognize barriers patients face before they ever enter a healthcare setting.

✨ Sustaining the Caregiver – Purpose-driven service reminds us why we chose this path and helps protect against burnout.

We ended the day with a powerful reminder that caregivers need care, too. Through poetry and creative expression, students explored how creativity provides a safe space to process emotions, reflect, and heal. As future healthcare professionals, learning to care for ourselves is just as important as learning to care for others.

Ready for the Floor: Tier IV Students Master PPE Basics

Before our students begin their clinical rotations, they have to master the foundational skills that keep the entire healthcare ecosystem safe. Today’s focus? The critical—and meticulous—process of donning and doffing Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
While it might sound like a routine task, proper infection control is one of the most vital habits a future healthcare professional can develop. Our students practiced the exact sequencing and safety protocols required to protect themselves and their future patients.

We are so excited to congratulate the students of Richland One for their completion of Prisma Health Systems MedEx Academy Tier I Clinical and Ancillary Shadowing Experience. Students from CA Johnson and Lower Richland High School got hands on experience across 4 different units that helped them identify what path into healthcare they wanted to take and solidify for them that their dreams and aspirations are possible.

On behalf of Prisma Health Systems’ MedEx Academy, we are grateful for Mr. Jeremy Goldsmith’s, our keynote speaker, words of wisdom to the everyone in attendance at the inaugural Tier I Clinical and Ancillary Shadowing Experience graduation ceremony.

A can apply to all areas of life and at any age. Thank you for inspiring us to finish the race and not be overwhelmed by the obstacles in the way. If we take it one day at a time or one trial at a time we become witnesses that each trials will morph into testimonies and joy really does come in the morning.
