๐ฟ Rest is an essential part of our mental, physical and emotional health and wellbeing. Lack of rest has been linked to an increased risk of illness, fatigue and a general decrease in overall wellness. Despite the information that we have about the negative effects of too little rest and relaxation, we live in a society that rewards "being busy".
What can we do to find the balance? ๐
Practicing self-care and being mindful of our thinking are two things which can have positive effects. Give yourself permission to put yourself first. Just like you would schedule any other appointment or task, you have the ability to schedule non-negotiable time for yourself- and you should! ๐ฟ
In recovery, we are so focused on moving forward that sometimes we forget that standing still is not only acceptable, it's necessary. Today, take time for you. Find a quiet place, leave your electronics behind and enjoy five minutes of your own thoughts and feelings. Close your eyes and pay attention to your breath. Notice the air on your skin. Listen to the sounds around you. Don't fight the thoughts that come into your mind; let them come and then let them leave. Recenter, bringing your focus back to your breath. ๐ธ
๐ฟ Lowered stress levels, reduced anxiety, improved focus, improved sleep quality, increased self-compassion, and better emotional regulation are just some of the science-backed benefits of mindful rest and meditation. Just five minutes, daily, acts as a mental "reset" and encourages development of long-term self-care routines.
๐ผ Today's goal: Replace five minutes of scrolling with five minutes of mindful rest and meditation.
