A smile doesn’t always tell the whole story. 📖

Chronic pain can make everyday life harder for older adults, affecting sleep, independence, relationships and emotional well-being. When a loved one seems more withdrawn, discouraged, irritable or overwhelmed, their mental health may deserve attention, too.

This Pain Awareness Month, let’s make space for the conversations that can lead to understanding, support, and better days.

We remember. We honor. We will never forget.

Today, we remember the lives lost on September 11, 2001, and honor the courage of the first responders, service members and everyday heroes who stepped forward in the face of unimaginable tragedy.

We hold their families, loved ones and all those affected by 9/11 in our thoughts today.

Sometimes, the signs are quieter than we expect.

Older adults have some of the highest su***de rates of any age group, and older men are especially at risk.

Major life changes, grief, loneliness, chronic pain, illness and loss of independence can take a toll on emotional well-being. But depression is treatable and is not a normal part of aging.

Watch for changes like:

• Withdrawing from loved ones or activities
• Persistent sadness or hopelessness
• Increased anxiety or agitation
• Talking about being a burden or wanting to die
• Giving away meaningful possessions or putting affairs in order

Sometimes prevention starts with noticing, asking, listening and helping someone get support.

You don’t have to face it alone. Mission Behavioral Health is here to help older adults take the next step toward better mental health. https://www.mbhcares.com/

If you or someone you know is experiencing a mental health crisis or thoughts of su***de, call or text 988. If there is immediate danger, call 911.

We understand that older adults often experience changes in mood, memory, behavior, relationships and daily routines. While being a normal part of life, these changes can sometimes make it harder to enjoy everyday moments or feel like yourself.

This is why simple steps toward healthy aging matter, including asking for help!

At Mission Behavioral Health, we believe every stage of life deserves compassionate care, dignity and the opportunity for better days ahead.

What’s one simple routine that helps make your day better?

Consistent routines, like waking up at a regular time, eating nourishing meals, participating in activities, getting enough rest and staying social, can provide structure, comfort and a sense of purpose, especially for older adults.

This is part of the person-focused care we offer at Mission Behavioral Health and why we provide a variety of therapy, activity and nutrition services!

What am I doing today? What can I do to make it better?

These two questions help guide each patient’s goals and progress at Mission Behavioral Health.

Each morning, we conduct a brief goal-setting group where patients choose one or a few tasks to accomplish. Goals can be simple: participating in a group activity, playing a game with another patient, or simply finding a way to make the day a little better.

Our goal-oriented approach is designed to inspire hope, encourage progress and foster a renewed sense of well-being.
