Thank you to Missouri State Senator Maggie Nurrenbern for stopping by our Gladstone donor center to donate blood and help raise awareness of the ongoing need for blood in our community!

Senator Nurrenbern was the primary sponsor of SB 1544, legislation designating January as Blood Donor Awareness Month in Missouri. The bill was signed into law by Governor Mike Kehoe on August 28, 2026.

This is why blood donation matters. ❤️ We’re incredibly proud of our lifesaving partnership with the Kansas City, Kansas Fire Department, helping bring blood directly to patients when every second counts.

A lifesaving mission takes a community. ❤️

Our annual Chairperson Appreciation Event brought together the incredible people who help make that mission possible — our dedicated blood drive chairpersons and community partners.

From organizing drives and recruiting donors to rallying their communities around the importance of giving blood, these advocates help ensure patients across Greater Kansas City, eastern Kansas and western Missouri have access to lifesaving blood products.

The evening included remarks from community and healthcare leaders, a powerful look at the Kansas City, Kansas, Fire Department’s pre-hospital transfusion program, and a moving story from blood recipient Amelia Knopp. We also celebrated many outstanding chairpersons whose commitment makes a true impact in blood drive collection.

To everyone who gives their time, energy and heart to this mission: thank you. Behind every successful blood drive is someone who helped make it happen — and your impact reaches far beyond the drive itself. 🩸

Gail has been a blood donor and volunteer for 18 years. But until recently, she had never heard of an HLA platelet donation.

Then she got a call asking if she could donate platelets for a 73-year-old patient in need. She didn’t hesitate.

“I googled and learned what HLA meant!”

HLA (human leukocyte antigens) are proteins that help the immune system recognize what belongs in the body. For some patients, finding a platelet donor with closely matched HLA markers can be critical—and sometimes, that perfect match is already part of our donor community.

By becoming a regular donor, you could be in our system when a patient needs someone with your unique blood or HLA characteristics. You never know when you might be the match someone has been waiting for. ❤️

❤️ A big shoutout to the University of Central Missouri community for showing up and giving back! Every donor who rolls up a sleeve helps make lifesaving blood available to patients who need it.

Youth blood donations are down 40% in our area, and we need more young people to get involved! Check with your local school or community group to find a blood drive near you, or stop by a donor center and become a lifesaver. 🩸
