Emotional safety is so important for kids to grow up confident, resilient, and secure in themselves. Good emotional safety with caregivers can be preventative against certain mental health struggles. Will look at different ways to cultivate specific kinds of emotional safety for children, but here are some fun questions to get started. These questions are great because they can bring up stuff your kids might not think to talk to you about on their own. They help them take stock of their life. They also can open up conversations about things they are struggling with or wish for that are hard to talk about otherwise.

At the ISSTD conference learning about DARVO from the amazing Dr. Jennifer Freyd. Her work on betrayal trauma is also incredible. Many abusers utilize the DARVO strategy to silence those they hurt, cause others to doubt the victim, or to garner sympathy for themselves. Use of DARVO strategies have high correlations with narcissistic personality traits and those who are more likely to perpetrate sexual assault.

Many of us want to change the world, to make a difference… However, one of the most important things we can do, to make us far more effective, is to do our own healing work first. This work may include healing traumas or other emotional scars from earlier in life, healing from grief, healing from inter-generational trauma, or healing from heartbreak and failed relationships. You may have heard “You can’t pour out of an empty cup.” There are many ways to heal and to be filled up with love and self compassion. Therapy is one way. It will also be a continuous process as you grow as a person and gain more insight. Find your way or ways and make it a priority. It is an investment in your future and your ability to make a difference.
