This week on Healing Through Their Minds, we’re looking at Rory Gilmore from Gilmore Girls. 📚

From a young age, Rory is known for being smart, responsible, and driven. But as expectations grow, so does the pressure to keep living up to the version of herself everyone has come to expect.

Rory’s story reminds us how easy it can be to tie our worth to achievement, success, or having everything figured out. As life challenges the path she once imagined, she learns that setbacks, uncertainty, and changing direction do not erase everything that came before.

Sometimes growth means realizing we are more than what we accomplish, and that it’s okay not to have the next chapter completely figured out. 💙

This week’s On Being Human is a beautiful reflection on grief and the ways the people we love can remain woven into the world around us. Through familiar places, shared memories, nature, and even the things left unsaid, grief can become a reminder of just how deeply someone mattered.

Written by Alex Madsen, this piece captures the complicated reality that grief can be both shattering and strangely protective. Sometimes, even after loss, everything can still feel green, familiar, and full of the people who helped shape us. 💚 Alex Madsen

September is here! 🍂 A new month can be a fresh reminder that it’s okay to take your time, honor your boundaries, embrace change, and start again when you need to.

At Foster Counseling, we believe growth doesn’t have to happen all at once. Sometimes, it starts with giving yourself a little more grace for where you are today. 💛

What reminder are you carrying with you into September?

Sometimes our worst moments can feel like they define us, especially when they come with regret, shame, or the feeling that we should have known better.

But one mistake, one difficult chapter, or one version of ourselves does not have to tell the whole story.

This moment from Ted Lasso offers a powerful reminder of what second chances can mean. Growth is not about pretending our weakest moments never happened. It is about taking responsibility, learning from them, and choosing what we do next.

We are all more than the moments we wish we could take back. 🤍

There is no single timeline for where you are supposed to be in life. 🌱

Growth can be messy, progress can look different from one season to the next, and sometimes simply giving yourself the space to rest, reflect, and figure things out is progress in itself.

It can be easy to look around and feel like everyone else is moving faster, accomplishing more, or has everything figured out. But someone else’s path was never meant to be the measure of your own.

You are allowed to grow at your own pace. You are allowed to change direction. And you are allowed to appreciate where you are while still looking forward to where you are going. 💛

As we notice the season start to change in this week’s On Being Human, we look to a beloved treasure from our namesake, Foster, in a letter written in late August nearly 20 years ago. Reading this reminds us of the beauty of handwritten and unedited real writing in stream-of-consciousness format, the power of noticing and naming our experiences and empathizing with others’ as well, and the posthumous connection cradled by this nearly-lost art.

Self-care matters at every stage of the school day. 🍎📚

As students and teachers head back into busy routines, it can be easy to focus on everything that needs to get done and forget to make space for ourselves. Self-care does not always have to mean doing something big. It can look like setting boundaries, taking a walk, asking for help, celebrating small wins, or simply giving yourself a few minutes to breathe and reset.

Whether you are teaching, learning, or supporting someone who is, remember that taking care of yourself is part of showing up as your best self. 💛

Which of these reminders do you want to carry with you this school year?

This week on Healing Through Their Minds, we’re looking at Ryan Atwood from The O.C. 🤍

Ryan learned early that depending on other people could lead to disappointment. Growing up surrounded by instability and neglect, he became guarded, self-reliant, and accustomed to handling things on his own.

But throughout The O.C., Ryan slowly learns something different. Through Sandy, Kirsten, Seth, and the relationships he builds in Newport, he experiences what it feels like to have people consistently show up for him. His past does not simply disappear, but he begins allowing himself to trust, accept support, and believe that he deserves a different future.

Ryan’s journey reminds us that the ways we learned to protect ourselves may have helped us survive, but we do not have to carry them forever. Sometimes healing begins when we finally experience the safety, connection, and consistency we were missing before. 💙
