Social skills are more than just making friends.

They include important everyday abilities such as:

- Making eye contact
- Responding to their name
- Taking turns Playing with others
- Expressing emotions and needs
- Following simple directions

For some children with autism, these skills may not develop naturally or may take extra support and practice.

This is where early intervention becomes so important.

The earlier children begin learning these foundational skills, the easier it can be for them to build relationships and adapt to social environments before preschool.

At ABLE, we provide Early Intervention ABA therapy in Lakeland, Tampa, Brandon, Clearwater, and Plant City, supporting families every step of the way.

👶 Early Signs of Autism in Toddlers: What Parents Should Look For 💙

Every child develops at their own pace, but recognizing early signs can help you take the right steps sooner. Early intervention for kids with autism can make a big difference, especially before they start school.

Here are 4 signs parents should keep an eye on:

🗣️ Communication Delays
Limited speech, not responding to their name, or not using gestures like pointing or waving.

👀 Social Interaction Differences
Avoiding eye contact, preferring to play alone, or not engaging with others.

🔁 Repetitive Behaviors & Routines
Lining up toys, repeating movements, or getting upset with small changes.

🎧 Sensory Sensitivities
Overreacting or underreacting to sounds, textures, lights, or environments.

If you notice these signs, you are not alone and support is available. Early intervention and ABA therapy can help your child build important life skills and confidence.

The Importance of Parents Taking Time Off: Supporting Your Child Starts With Supporting Yourself

Parenting a child with autism is a journey filled with love, dedication, and daily commitment. While the focus is often on therapies, routines, and progress, one important piece is sometimes overlooked… the well-being of the parent.

At ABLE (Applied Behavioral Learning Experiences), we provide ABA therapy in Lakeland, Tampa, Brandon, Plant City, and Clearwater, and we strongly believe that when parents are supported, children thrive and have better results on their ABA Therapy journey.

Why Parent Mental Health Matters

Caring for a child with autism can be both rewarding and demanding. Between appointments, school coordination, and managing behaviors, it is easy for parents to feel overwhelmed or burned out.

When parents do not have time to recharge, it can lead to:

Increased stress and fatigue
Difficulty staying patient and consistent
Emotional exhaustion
Less energy to support their child’s growth

Taking time off is not selfish. It is necessary. A well-rested and emotionally balanced parent is better equipped to provide structure, encouragement, and love.

How Taking Time Off Benefits Your Child

When parents prioritize their mental health, it directly impacts their child’s success.

Children benefit from:

More positive and patient interactions
Greater consistency with routines and expectations
A calmer home environment
Stronger emotional connection with their parents

In ABA therapy, consistency and reinforcement are key. When parents feel refreshed, they can better apply strategies at home and support their child’s progress and see results faster.

Building Balance With ABA Support

At ABLE, we understand that families need support beyond therapy sessions. That is why we go the extra mile to create opportunities for parents to rest and recharge, and that's why we proudly offer monthly Parents Time Out events at all our locations, giving families a chance to take a well-deserved break while their children are in a safe, structured, and supportive environment.

During this time, parents can:

Enjoy a date night
Relax at home
Go to the spa or spend time with friends
Simply take a moment to breathe and reset

Meanwhile, children continue building social skills, engaging in fun activities, and practicing what they learn through ABA therapy.

A Stronger Family Starts With Support

Taking time for yourself does not take away from your child. It strengthens your ability to show up as your best self.

At ABLE, we are committed to supporting the entire family by providing high-quality ABA therapy in Lakeland, Tampa, Brandon, Plant City, and Clearwater, along with programs that make a real difference in everyday life.

Seasonal Allergies & Autism: What Parents Should Know

Spring in Florida is beautiful, but seasonal allergies can impact children with autism in unexpected ways. Things like congestion, itchy eyes, and poor sleep can lead to increased irritability, trouble focusing, or changes in behavior.

At ABLE, we use ABA therapy strategies to help children cope during allergy season by:
1. Identifying Triggers

ABA therapists work with families to identify patterns between allergy symptoms and behavior changes. This helps create more effective strategies.

2. Teaching Communication Skills

Children are taught to express discomfort in appropriate ways, such as requesting a break, asking for help, or using simple communication tools.

3. Adjusting Expectations

During allergy season, ABA programs can be adjusted to match the child’s energy and comfort level, while still maintaining consistency.

4. Reinforcing Coping Skills

Positive reinforcement is used to encourage calm behavior, flexibility, and cooperation during uncomfortable moments.

5. Supporting Routines

Even when allergies disrupt daily life, maintaining structure with visual schedules and predictable routines helps reduce stress.

💡 Remember, behavior is communication. What may look like a behavior change could be your child expressing discomfort.

We proudly provide ABA therapy in Lakeland, Tampa, Brandon, Plant City, and Clearwater, supporting families through every season.
