Spooky season is here again! Imagine how scary it can be for West Virginia youth transitioning out of foster care and pursuing their educational dreams with sometimes little to no additional support on their journey.

The Mentoring and Oversight for Developing Independence with Foster Youth (MODIFY) program provides ongoing services and resources specifically to meet the education and training needs of eligible former foster youth of West Virginia interested in furthering their education.

Hear first-hand about how last year's drive impacted a MODIFY client:

"I ended up buying a new jacket, and since I walk to and from work every day, it kept me warm and snug through the cold season. It was one of those simple things that made a big difference—a genuine treat during a season when I really needed one. Receiving funds from the drive reminded me that people care, and it brought me so much joy and comfort. I'm so grateful for it. I’m honestly blessed to have this program available to me."

Please consider donating to the MODIFY program’s Holiday Donation Drive. You could help make a difference by offering an online donation to help support a youth in need. Donations will be accepted through December 13th and are tax deductible through the WVU Foundation.

Do you know about the Specialized Family Care (SFC) program at the WVU CED?
SFC helps link adults and children who have intellectual and/or developmental disabilities with families that are willing to open their homes to them and offer loving family environments. SFC allows a person to continue living in the community in safe, loving family units rather than being confined to an institutional setting or left unattended without community care.
Persons qualified for this program live in a foster care setting with individuals and families who are specially screened, trained, and state-certified to provide care in their home. The person is welcomed into the home as a family member.

Are you or a family member interested in the WVU Country Roads program? Sign up for our Fall Open House happening on Thursday, November 19, 2026 and/or the virtual information sessions on December 28, 2026 to learn more!

Country Roads is an on-campus program designed for individuals with intellectual and/or developmental disabilities. The goal of the program is to prepare students with disabilities for independence by providing academic courses, social engagement, and real-world work experiences. Students live in shared residential housing, participate in social activities on campus, and receive career education and training.

The Country Roads Fall Open House includes a campus tour, a PRT ride, info on financial aid, and a presentation all about the program. Please note that we cannot accommodate large school groups. Those tours should be scheduled through the WVU Visitor's Center. The virtual info sessions offer three different time slots throughout the day on December 28 to attend. Recordings will also be available to view if you are unable to make one of the times.
