Hi, I’m Lauren, and I’m a new counseling intern at Unbound Counseling.

I’m a photographer, a mom, a former elementary school teacher, and now, somehow, I’m working toward my second master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling.

Counseling wasn’t some lifelong plan I had mapped out. It grew out of a lot of life, a lot of curiosity about people, and a realization that I wanted to understand more about what happens beneath the surface of our experiences.

I deeply love my career in photography and absolutely plan for it to remain a huge part of my life. I love the art of it, the process of making photographs, and the privilege of documenting people’s lives. One of my favorite parts of that work, though, has always been getting to know the people in front of my camera and hearing their stories.

Photography has taught me that you can look at someone’s life from the outside and have absolutely no idea what they’re carrying.

I think that’s one of the things that draws me to counseling, too.

I don’t believe people need someone to swoop in and fix them. Sometimes we just need a place where we can be honest about what’s actually going on, without having to already know what to do about it.

A few things you should probably know about me:
•I will almost always choose a lamp over an overhead light.

• I believe crying is a completely acceptable response to both profound grief and a mildly overwhelming Tuesday.

• And I’m still learning. A lot. Which is actually one of the things I love most about this stage of my life.

I’m really grateful to be learning alongside the team at Unbound and to have the opportunity to meet the people who walk through their doors.

I’m not showing up with all the answers. I’m showing up ready to listen, learn, and sit with people while they figure out what comes next.

To learn more about our affordable counseling options or to schedule a session with me, please reach out to the intake team at [email protected] or submit an inquiry through the www.unboundcounseling.org. Please request Lauren so your message reaches me.

Hi, I'm Chloe!

I’ve always been fascinated by people, how we grow and how our experiences shape us.

When I chose psychology, people worried it wasn't a practical path. But I wanted to use what I was learning to make a real difference, which is why I chose to enter a master's program.

Starting this internship at Unbound Counseling is both exciting and humbling. I truly believe everyone has a story, and sometimes all someone needs is a safe, non-judgmental space to tell it. Being a small part of that process is something I’ll never take for granted.

Chloe is the newest intern to join the Unbound Counseling family! She is passionate about making care accessible to those who might otherwise find counseling out of reach.

Chloe provides care under the clinical supervision of Brenda.
Availability: Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays.

How to book: Avoid awkward phone calls! Email [email protected] or fill out the intake form to request Chloe at unboundcounseling.org.

Please help us give her a warm welcome! We are so grateful to have her with us!

Hi,

We wanted to Introduce you to Unbound Community Counseling!

Counseling can be expensive. Insurance can be confusing. And sometimes you just need a more affordable place to start.

That’s why we created Unbound Community Counseling.

Through Community Counseling, clients can receive individual counseling from graduate counseling interns completing the final stage of their master’s degree training, with ongoing supervision and support from licensed clinicians at Unbound.

We’re starting the program with Lauren, who currently is attending West Virginia Wesleyan College, and Chloe, a graduate counseling intern at Liberty University.

And they already know a little something about serving West Virginia communities... both Lauren and Chloe were teachers here in West Virginia before beginning their work in counseling.

Fees are:
$40 initial appointment
$30 individual sessions
Sliding scale is also available

Services are self-pay and are not billed to insurance.

And because we know making the first phone call can sometimes be the hardest part, online scheduling is available. No phone call required.

Prefer to talk to someone first? That’s okay, too. Our intake team can answer questions and help you figure out whether Community Counseling is a good fit.

Hi, I’m Hailee, one of the therapists at Unbound Counseling.

I’m in my late 20s, and for a long time, I thought I was supposed to have life figured out by now. The older I get, the more I realize that most of us are just figuring it out as we go.

And honestly? I find that comforting.

I didn’t exactly take the traditional route to get here. I flunked out of college the first time. I didn’t really know how to do college, I had absolutely no idea what I wanted to do with my life, and my priorities were…well, let’s just say they could have used some work.

Eventually, I picked myself back up. I went back to school, earned my bachelor’s degree, and then my master’s.

It took me a while to realize that not having your life figured out doesn’t mean you’re failing at life.

I also grew up with some experiences that made me learn pretty early that family can be complicated. I know what it’s like to carry things from childhood into adulthood, to compare yourself to other people, and to wonder whether the things you’ve been through are still affecting you.

Maybe that’s part of why I became the therapist I am.

I know what it’s like to wish you had a place where you could say the messy stuff out loud without having to make it sound better first.

I’m also a twin, so comparison has basically been a lifelong extracurricular activity.
These days, I especially enjoy working with teens, college students, and adults who are trying to figure out who they are, where they’re going, and why everyone else seems to have their life together when they absolutely do not.

Thing like College stress. Anxiety. Relationships. Family stuff. Self-esteem. Big life decisions. Feeling stuck. Feeling behind. Feeling like you should have it all figured out by now. I know them by name. And you if feel like you should have all that figured out by now. Well, You don’t have to.

My office has a comfy couch, candy, random little trinkets, and a therapist who will actually listen to what you’re saying.

You don’t need to come in with a five-year plan. You don’t even have to know exactly what’s wrong.

You can show up overwhelmed, anxious, confused, frustrated, or just tired of trying to figure everything out by yourself. We can start there.

I’ve lived in Morgantown for most of my life, have a few cats keeping me company, and am still figuring out my own life one day at a time.

I guess that’s kind of the point.

You don’t have to have it all together before you ask for help.
Sometimes you just need a comfy couch, some candy, and someone "who gets it."

Hi, we’re Brenda and Mandy; the owners of Unbound Counseling, mothers in our 40s, and women mostly running on written calendars, coffee, leftovers, Sheetz pepperoni rolls, and conversations we started but never finished.

Mandy wrangles two kids to baseball practice, with soccer soon joining the family schedule because apparently there was still one free square left on the calendar.

Brenda has one starting kindergarten and another beginning her senior year in color guard. Two completely different milestones happening at the exact same time, because motherhood enjoys emotional whiplash.

Today, our conversation turned to the fact that neither of us has taken our kids back-to-school shopping.

Honestly, we both prefer hand-me-downs. That’s how we were raised: perfectly good clothes passed from one family to another, usually arriving in a garbage bag with instructions to ā€œgo through these before we donate them.ā€

Inside, there’s always one great find, something that might fit next year, and at least one item no one will admit ever belonged to them.

Whether your kids are starting school in brand-new outfits, last year’s clothes, thrift-store finds, or hand-me-downs from someone who loves them, you’re doing a good job even if no one has told you lately.

We hope you start the school year strong.

And if not…well, we aren’t either.

Open a square on your calendar. We have a few openings on ours.

We have coffee and a commitment to make space that is just for you. Let’s be honest. Parenting is not for the weak.

Want to talk to a kind, highly trained stranger about it?

College starts soon.

And whether you’re moving into a dorm for the first time, coming back after taking some time off, working full-time while finishing your degree online, or somewhere in between this transition can be a lot.

New routines. New expectations. New people. New pressures. And sometimes a whole lot of figuring out who you are and what comes next.

So we put together our August College Edition with a few things we think are worth knowing as you head into the semester.

And one reminder we hope you’ll keep:

You don’t have to be in crisis to have someone in your corner.

Sometimes having one consistent person to talk to while everything else is changing can make all the difference.

Welcome back, college students. We’re rooting for you.
