Shoulder Pain? Is It a Rotator Cuff Tear or Shoulder Impingement? 🤔

While both can cause shoulder pain, there are a few common differences:

🔹 Shoulder Impingement
• Pain when reaching overhead
• Pain when reaching behind your back
• Often hurts during activity but improves with rest
• Strength is usually still fairly good

🔹 Rotator Cuff Tear
• Weakness when lifting your arm
• Difficulty reaching overhead or lifting objects
• Pain may occur even at rest or at night
• You may feel like your arm “just won’t do what you want it to”

The good news? Many shoulder conditions improve with the right treatment and exercise program.

If shoulder pain is limiting your daily activities, don’t ignore it. An evaluation can help determine the cause and the best path forward.

👀 Sometimes the simple exercises are the most effective.

There are tons of fancy and challenging exercises all over the internet, but after a back injury, going back to the basics can be one of the best things you can do.

One of my go-to exercises is supine lower trunk rotations (gentle side-to-side knee rotations while lying on your back).

After an injury, the muscles around your lower back often tighten up to protect the area. That initial guarding can be helpful early on, but if those muscles stay tight for too long, it can lead to more stiffness, discomfort, and slower recovery.

This gentle movement can help:
✅ Reduce lower back stiffness
✅ Relax tight muscles around the spine
✅ Improve mobility
✅ Get your back moving comfortably again

Sometimes recovery doesn’t need to be complicated.

100% Yes!

While we can’t “cure” arthritis, the right exercises and treatment can help:

✔️ Reduce joint pain

✔️ Improve mobility and flexibility

✔️ Build strength around painful joints

✔️ Make everyday activities like walking, standing, and getting up from a chair easier.

A lot of people avoid movement because of pain, but in many cases, the right type of movement is actually part of the solution.

If arthritis is limiting your daily activities, physical therapy may help you move with less pain.

Most people don’t have a “posture problem”…
They have a daily habit problem.

The good news 👀
Small changes throughout your day can make a big difference.

Here are simple ways to improve your posture without overthinking it:

✅ Reset your posture often (not just once)
Instead of trying to sit “perfect” all day, do quick resets:
• Sit tall
• Gently pull shoulders back
• Lift your chest slightly

✅ Move more, sit less
Stiffness builds when you stay in one position too long
• Stand up during commercials
• Walk while on phone calls
• Take short movement breaks

✅ Use your environment
Set yourself up for better posture:
• Chair that supports your back
• Screen at eye level
• Feet flat on the ground

✅ Daily mobility exercises
A lot of poor posture comes from tightness in the front of the body
Simple stretches (doorway stretch) can help counteract that forward slump

✅ Strengthen what supports you
Posture isn’t just about sitting up straight—it’s about strength
Focus on:
• Upper back
• Core
• Shoulders

✅ Don’t aim for perfect—aim for consistent
Good posture isn’t rigid
It’s about moving well and changing positions often

👉 The goal: stay mobile, reduce strain, and keep doing the things you enjoy
