About 2/3 of Americans drink coffee daily- for most the day does not begin until the first cup of coffee. While there is no data for people living with multiple sclerosis (MS), one can surmise that the number is even greater because of the fatigue that most of these patients experience. But the question is: does caffeine help or hurt MS-related symptoms. Like most questions the answer is not always straight forward.
The benefits:
1. Reduces Fatigue
Because caffeine is a stimulant, it can increase alertness and help some people feel more energized throughout the day, combatting the overwhelming fatigue that can. Accompany MS..
2. Contains Potentially Beneficial Compounds
Coffee contains antioxidants and other compounds that may help reduce inflammation and protect cells from damage.
3. Caffeine May Influence MS Risk
Several studies have suggested that people who regularly consume coffee may have a lower risk of developing MS- some show a 20-30% lower risk of developing MS compared with non-drinkers. Scientists continue to investigate whether caffeine affects MS progression, disability, cognition, or inflammation. Results remain mixed.
The downsides:
1. Worsened Bladder Symptoms
MS can cause bladder urgency, frequency, and incontinence. Unfortunately, caffeine can irritate the bladder and act as a mild diuretic, making these symptoms worse.
2. Increased Anxiety
Higher amounts can lead to feelings of nervousness, jitteriness, or anxiety. Pay attention to how caffeine affects your emotional well-being.
3. Sleep Pattern Disruption
Drinking caffeinated beverages late in the day can make it harder to fall asleep or stay asleep. Poor sleep can worsen fatigue and cognitive symptoms.
4. Worsened headaches
Migraine is already much more common in people with MS than in the general population. In the general US population, 12-14% of adults have migraines. In MS patients that can be closer to 40-50%. It is well known that large amount of caffeine can trigger migraines as can caffeine withdrawal.
The Bottom Line
Caffeine is neither entirely good nor entirely bad for people with MS. It may help improve alertness and reduce fatigue, but it can also worsen bladder symptoms, anxiety, and sleep problems. The best approach is to pay attention to how your body responds and discuss any concerns with your healthcare provider.
