September is Sickle Cell Awareness Month!

Sickle cell disease (SCD) is a group of inherited red blood cell disorders. Healthy red blood cells become hard and sticky,
and look like a sickle. These sickle cells die early, which causes a constant shortage of red blood cells. They also get stuck
in small blood vessels, blocking the flow of blood and oxygen.

Sickle cell symptoms include pain, swelling in the hands and feet, long-term eye damage, strokes, and infections such as flu,
meningitis, and hepatitis.
