Safe motherhood and healthy newborns start with skilled, confident health workers.

Through the Helping Mothers Survive and Helping Babies Survive programs, health workers practice real-life emergency scenarios using hands-on simulations and drills. This help build the confidence and skills needed to respond quickly during childbirth and newborn emergencies.

By strengthening the health workers’ skills, Health Builders is helping improve the quality of care available to mothers and babies across communities.

“Before the training, managing complications such as heavy bleeding after childbirth, high blood pressure during pregnancy, and newborn resuscitation was challenging. The Helping Mothers Survive and Helping Babies Survive programs helped me gain confidence and practical skills to respond to emergency situations affecting mothers and newborns.”, Theresie Mukabayizere, Head Midwife at Rutongo Hospital.

Through continuous training and mentorship, Health Builders is strengthening the capacity of health workers to improve the quality of care for mothers and newborns in their communities.

This Mother’s Day, we celebrate mothers everywhere, and the health workers who stand beside them every day.

Behind every safe pregnancy and delivery are skilled and supported healthcare providers.

Through the Helping Mothers Survive and Helping Babies Survive program, Health Builders equips midwives, nurses, and other health workers with practical, hands-on skills to respond quickly and effectively during pregnancy, childbirth, and newborn emergencies.

By investing in real-life training, mentorship, and emergency response skills, we are helping ensure safer pregnancies, safer deliveries, and healthier beginnings for mothers and babies across communities.

“I encourage all pregnant women to attend their ANC visits and undergo ultrasound screening.” Zainabu Uwimana

In Rwamagana District, obstetrical ultrasound services are no longer a privilege. They are now a core part of antenatal care for every pregnant woman.

A simple ultrasound during pregnancy can detect complications early and help protect the lives of mothers and babies.

What does good health for mothers really look like?

It is more than surviving childbirth. It is about thriving before, during, and after pregnancy, with access to quality care, timely screening, and the support needed to stay healthy and strong.

For Zainabu, one antenatal visit changed everything. An ultrasound scan revealed a rare but life-threatening problem that could have gone undetected until it was too late.

Because the service was available at her local health center, and because a skilled midwife acted quickly, she was referred in time for emergency care. Today, she is alive to share her story.

Zainabu’s experience reminds us that access to quality maternal health services is not optional. It is lifesaving.
