November is National Family Caregivers Month.

If you're the one who knows which prescriptions need picked up, when the next appointment is, what groceries are running low and whether Mom sounded “off” on the phone yesterday, this month is for you.

You may not call yourself a caregiver. A lot of people don't.

But you're doing the work.

And it's okay to admit that sometimes it's a lot.

The clocks go back Sunday.

While you're changing the microwave clock for the 47th time, check a few other things too.

Make sure the bedside lamp works.
Check night-lights in the hallway and bathroom.
Take a look at medication reminder times if they're tied to a clock.
And give sleep routines a few days to settle.

That one-hour change can feel bigger for someone whose routine matters a lot.

Halloween isn't just for kids.

Put the candy bowl by Mom's chair and let her hand it out.
Bring the grandkids by in costume.
Watch the old scary movie Dad likes.
Drive around and look at decorations.

A lot of “activities” don't need to be organized activities. Sometimes it's just making sure somebody still gets to be part of the fun.

Before the first truly miserable Nebraska weather shows up, take a look at the pantry.

Does your older parent or neighbor have a few easy meals on hand if they don't want to get out?
Are prescriptions filled?
Is there pet food?
Do they have a flashlight where they can actually find it?

Nothing dramatic. Just the stuff that's a pain to discover you're out of when the wind is howling.

We're taking on more clients across northwest and northeast Nebraska, and we want to grow the right way.

That means finding caregivers who are dependable, kind and comfortable with the everyday work that helps someone stay at home.

If that sounds like you, come grow with us.

You don't have to know exactly what kind of care you need before you call us.

You can call and say, “Here's what's going on.”

That's enough.

We'll ask questions, talk through what you're seeing and help you figure out whether what we offer makes sense for your family.

When care options disappear, the need for care doesn't disappear with them.

Nebraska has lost nursing homes and assisted-living facilities across the state, and rural communities are feeling the impact. For some families, the next available option may now be another town, another county or much farther from home.

Our newest At the Table looks at what's happening in rural Nebraska and how in-home and community-based care can be part of the larger picture.
