💚 It’s Mental Health Awareness Month 💚

Did you know that up to 1 in 5 children will experience a mental health, emotional, or behavioral challenge at some point during childhood? Anxiety, ADHD, depression, and behavioral concerns are among the most common — and they can show up as early as the preschool years.

The good news? Early support makes a real difference. And you don’t need to look far to find it.

At Beacon Pediatrics, we offer integrated behavioral health services so your child can get the care they need in a place they already know and trust:

✅ Behavioral Health Consultants — available on-site to provide screening, brief counseling, coping strategies, and support for anxiety, mood, behavior, and adjustment concerns — all as part of your child’s regular pediatric care.

✅ Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner — specializing in medication management for children and adolescents who may benefit from medication as part of their treatment plan, working hand-in-hand with your child’s pediatrician.

✅ A Team-Based Approach — our pediatricians, behavioral health consultants, and psychiatric nurse practitioner collaborate closely so your child receives coordinated, whole-person care under one roof.

You don’t have to navigate this alone. Whether your child is struggling with big emotions, school stress, attention difficulties, or something you can’t quite put your finger on — we’re here to help.

Call us or ask at your next visit to learn more about our behavioral health services.

🌙 Safe Sleep — especially when you’re exhausted 🌙

We talk a lot about safe sleep because it matters — but we also know something just as real: you are tired.

Some babies are up every hour. Some are colicky. Some only settle when they’re on you.
And in those moments — at 2 AM, on the couch, or in bed — it’s easy to think, “just for a minute…”

That’s where risk can quietly creep in.

Every year in the U.S., about 3,500 infants die from sleep-related causes. Many of these tragedies happen not because parents didn’t care or didn’t know — but because they were exhausted.

So instead of just saying “don’t co-sleep,” here’s what we want you to know:

If you feel like you might fall asleep, put your baby down in a safe place first. Even if they cry.
A few minutes of crying is safer than falling asleep holding your baby on a couch or in bed.

The safest setup (when you do sleep):

✅ ALONE — No blankets, pillows, stuffed animals, or bumpers
✅ ON THEIR BACK — Every sleep, every time
✅ IN A CRIB or bassinet — Firm, flat surface with a fitted sheet

A few things that really help in real life:

🛏️ Keep a crib or bassinet right next to your bed
🍼 Try a pacifier at sleep time
👥 Take shifts if you can — even a few hours of protected sleep helps
🚭 Keep the environment smoke- and vape-free
💉Stay up to date on vaccines
🌡️ Avoid overheating — simple layers are enough

High-risk situations to avoid (especially when exhausted):

🚫 Falling asleep on a couch or chair with your baby
🚫 Bringing your baby into an adult bed, especially if you’re very tired
🚫 Letting baby sleep in swings, car seats, or loungers

Safe sleep isn’t just for nighttime — it’s for every nap.

Most importantly:
If this feels hard, that doesn’t mean you’re doing anything wrong. It means you’re a parent.

If your baby isn’t sleeping, if you’re overwhelmed, or if you’ve found yourself in these situations — please tell us. We can help problem-solve with you, without judgment.

You’re not alone in this.
We’re here for your baby — and for you!
