There may never be a perfect time to have difficult conversations about serious illness.

There may never be a perfect time to say “I love you.”
Or “I'm proud of you.”
Or “Thank you.”
Or “I'm sorry.”

Don't wait for the perfect moment.

Sometimes the most meaningful conversations happen in the middle of an ordinary day.

“I want to go home.”

For families caring for someone with serious illness or dementia, these words can be incredibly challenging.

Sometimes “home” may mean a physical place. But sometimes it can represent something deeper — safety, familiarity, comfort, or a time in life when things felt easier.

Instead of immediately trying to explain why they can't go home, consider responding to the feeling behind the words.

“What do you miss about home?”

That question may open the door to understanding what your loved one really needs.

Hospice conversations can be difficult. But that doesn't mean every moment has to be serious.

Laughter is still allowed.

Tell the funny story.
Watch the favorite comedy.
Share an inside joke.
Laugh about something silly that happened years ago.

Serious illness doesn't erase someone's personality — and joy still has a place in the room.

Music can reach us in ways that words sometimes can't.

A familiar song can bring back a memory, change someone's mood, encourage connection, or simply create a peaceful environment.

Try making a playlist of songs that have meaning to your loved one — songs from their younger years, their wedding, favorite artists, or music they enjoyed throughout their life.

Sometimes a song can say what words cannot. 🎶

One of the most difficult changes for families to witness can be a loved one eating and drinking less.

As the body changes, appetite and thirst often change too. This can be a natural part of the dying process.

Rather than focusing solely on how much someone is eating, families can focus on comfort — offering favorite tastes, small amounts when desired, and avoiding pressure.

Our hospice teams are here to help families understand these changes and know what to expect.

When someone is seriously ill, we can become focused on appointments, medications, symptoms, and care needs.

But there's another important question:

“What would make today a good day?”

Maybe it's sitting outside.
Maybe it's listening to a favorite album.
Maybe it's having ice cream.
Maybe it's seeing a beloved pet.
Maybe it's simply having a quiet afternoon with family.

Good days don't have to be big days.

A favorite blanket. A stuffed animal. A piece of clothing. A photograph.

Small, familiar objects can provide an incredible sense of comfort, especially when someone is experiencing confusion, anxiety, or changes in their environment.

When someone is receiving hospice care, don't underestimate the power of the familiar.

Sometimes comfort is something we can hold. ❤️

Sometimes a person receiving hospice care may no longer recognize a familiar place, person, or routine.

For families, this can be incredibly difficult.

Instead of correcting or repeatedly explaining, try meeting the person where they are. A familiar song, a favorite photograph, a comforting scent, or simply sitting beside them can provide reassurance without requiring them to understand everything around them.

At the end of life, connection doesn't always require words. ❤️

Our RN case manager, Maggie, was so excited when she arrived for her visit with her patient Gloria, and was able to celebrate her birthday with her and get her outside with her family! Our team loves when they get to join in on these special moments with the patients and their family! Happy birthday to Gloria!
