Vellum St Soap Company

Vellum St Soap Company The soap you wish your mouth got washed out with! We craft our soap the old school way, using lye. lard (tallow, duck, and goat fat as well!), and love.

Vellum Street Soap Company is a victual apothecary, basically meaning we don't believe you should put anything on your skin that you wouldn't put in your mouth. All of our cold process soaps are made from high quality, food grade ingredients, locally and sustainably sourced, with nothing added that doesn't have a beneficial purpose for your body. With our founders background as a chef, with a f

ocus on sourcing sustainably and nutritional quality, you can be assured every ingredient that goes into our soaps has been researched and benefits tested, to get you the best possible finished product. Many of our ingredients are procured from local restaurants, excess ingredients that have no further ingredient use in the kitchen, but make wonderful ingredients for soap. We're proud of our relationships with these establishments, and are thrilled to make them more sustainable by working towards using every part of every animal and plant they bring into their kitchens. Vellum Street is the soap you wished your mouth got washed out with!

The soap you wish your mouth got washed out with 🐮💋🧼

The heart of our brand, these grass fed, tallow based bar soaps are a wonderful way to keep your skin clean & in fighting shape. Locally minded, sustainably focused & chef made, we source many otherwise discarded, food grade ingredients from area restaurants & farms, seeing their value & saving them from waste bins. Starting with biocompatable grass fed tallow, our bar soaps are gentle enough for the face, yet effective enough to wash away any dirt & grime you may accumulate in your day!

Noncomedogenic & ultra moisturizing, tallow makes the perfect soap for the whole household, no matter how dirty! The fatty acids in tallow are much closer in molecular structure to the oils our own skin produces than more commonly used plant oils & is extremely rich in the same kinds of lipids present in youthful, vibrant skin.

Soap, at its inception, was regularly made from a combination of animal fats & alkaline salts (the Egyptians), or tallow & ash (the Celts/Germans). Tallow/other animal fats are also highly sustainable, as they are quite often a rather underused by-product of the meat industry. Quality matters, which is why all of our animal fat comes from pastured, humanely raised animals, from local farms & butchers. What you put ON your skin is just as important as what you put IN your mouth, which is why we use upcycled & local food grade ingredients, all safe enough to eat - cherry seeds, citrus peels, corn silk, previously steeped tea leaves- there’s a reason it’s the soap you wish your mouth got washed out with!

For use on lips, hands, face, ass... tallow’s great for skin when it’s been fed grass!

I set an example. That’s all anyone can do.

Everyone has an opinion & everyone thinks that theirs is right. For almost every opinion, cherry picked research can be found to back it up. We all have cognitive biases & we choose our facts, generally, based on them. We gravitate towards people who tend to hold those same opinions, further strengthening the echo chambers of our beliefs & reinforcing their righteousness.

When I started Vellum Street, the goal to make a gentle, synthetic free soap to treat my skin issues (stemming from a 20+ year auto immune condition, misdiagnosed by specialists) using kitchen scraps from my bakery, I didn’t have money, or even an actual business, in mind. I was doing it for myself & friends also suffering. I was doing it to try & be less wasteful. Because of this, I have always based my decisions for Vellum Street on the best ones I could make for healthy skin & a healthy environment (which are intrinsically intertwined) & that has brought so many wonderful folks into the workings of this little biz thats now my full time gig. For that, I’m grateful for the like-attracts-like effect.

When VS started, 100% of the glass packaging we used came through our relationship with & their nonprofit . As we’ve grown, that number sits now at about 60-70%, as we’ve needed to supplement with some newly purchased glass from the amazing . We are so lucky to partner with BU, allowing us to use glass “trash” to its full potential, giving us clean & hardy containers that won’t leech into our products like plastics can, that can be used again & again & again, cutting the need for shipping even more heavy glass packaging from places outside our immediate community. Contrary to what you might think, using waste items can often be way more expensive than purchasing new due to the time it takes to source, collect, clean, & prepare them!

While the bulk of the work to maintain homeostasis in the environment certainly rests upon the massive corporations of the world, it doesn’t hurt for us little guys to be thoughtful in our practices as well & there’s no reason we can’t have some fun w

Why is it called that marshmallow? ‘Cuz it sounds cool. It’s also made of beef fat and marshmallow root, so what else were we supposed to call it?

If you’ve been with us long, you already know the incredible benefits of using the right kind of fat for your skin - i.e.tallow (if you’re new here, welcome! Go check out the “WHY TALLOW” tab on our site to learn more- we’ve been doing this professionally for well over a decade & we know a thing or two about beef fat!), so now lets talk about the other magic ingredient - marshmallow root!

The marshmallow plant has been used in herbal medicine for centuries, is native to Northern Africa and Eastern Europe, and now grows throughout North America. Marshmallow root has been cherished in skincare for just as long, providing instant hydration, while it continuously works to improve the skin’s ability to retain moisture, and has been shown to have anti-inflammatory benefits. It also contains a naturally occuring botanical form of hyaluronic acid that can firm the skin and increase moisture levels. This comes from a thick, gum-like substance called mucilage within the root.

Our fat marshmallow Tallow & Beeswax balm contains 4 carefully chosen ingredients for the best in simple, ancestral skincare:
Local pasture raised beef suet (aka tallow)
Local beeswax
Regenerative Organic Marshmallow Root
Organic vanilla bean

Great for: Face, Hands, Lips, Feet, Hair, Beards, Babies, Puppies, Kittens, Cuts, Scrapes, Sunburns, Eczema, Psoriasis & MORE!

Lips, hands, face, or ass, tallow is great for skin when it’s been raised on grass!!

Here at Vellum Street, a lot of our friends are cowboys, cattle ranchers, and farmers, and we like to celebrate that with special collaborations!

Our friends at in Salem County NJ are some of our favorites! Established in 1988 as a cow calf operations, Triple C has gone through many changes over the years, constantly evolving to bring you some of the best beef New Jersey has to offer! Specializing in Black Angus, the Coles family run the operation, and Skip, Stacey, Corie, and Skip are some of the best people I have ever met.

Triple C Black Angus Beef is growth hormone and antibiotic free! Their animals are maintained on a pasture and forage based diet and then transitioned to a grain based diet for the 3-4 month finishing phase. This allows for a more efficient rate of gain as well as increasing the percentage of marbling or intramuscular fat. With increased marbling comes a juicier more tender eating experience!

We purchase a lot of suet tallow from the Triple C, and wanted to highlight that relationship with a special scent! Some of you might remember our retired scent Honey Basil, and if you were one of its many fans you will ABSOLUTELY LOVE this bar!

This signature soap is also available at their farm stand, which I HIGHLY recommend visiting, as it is always fully stocked with some of the best local goodies around that Corie curates for your tastebud’s pleasure. I promise you wont leave empty handed or hearted!

INGREDIENTS:
Ingredients: Saponified Triple C Black Angus tallow, honey, basil essential oil, A2 milk, basil

From last weeks heatwave 🥵

For my philosophy nerds - Is the misplacement of soap on an unintended surface considered clean or dirty?? 🤔🧼

Anywho, make sure to stay clean, amigos. Pits, t**s, & slits at the minimum, k?

Moochas Grassias, Moohalo, Moorci 🐮💋

fat marshmallow is the ultimate healthy skin helper! Biocompatable, skin loving, grass fed tallow soap & skincare, with no added scent or fragrance, completely coconut oil & derivative free!!

While we LOVE our tallow bar soaps and Tsllow & Beeswax Balms, right now I want to shine the spotlight on our Magnesium Milk Bath!

Made of A2 milk, lightly scented with real vanilla bean and blended with magnesium rich epsom salt...it’s a treat your skin won’t forget and your mouth may be a little jealous of! Some things a milk bath can help with?

Soothe and hydrate skin
Reduce fine lines and wrinkles
Exfoliate skin
Improve skin firmness
Reduce dry spots and flare-ups
Ease sunburn
Soothe poison ivy
Improve inflammatory skin conditions
Ease tension aka relax the f**k outta ya 😏

This trio is my personal powerhouse of must haves for a summer of fun! Toss in a jar of our non nano zinc oxide sun cream, and you’re all set for any adventure the solar season tosses your way!

Lips, hands, face, or ass, tallow is great for skin when it’s been fed grass!🐮💋☀️

Facts of life, y’all - we use real, unadulterated ingredients, without fillers, stabilizers, or preservatives, and our products reflect that 🤷🏻‍♀️

When it’s hot, they melt. When it’s cold, they harden.

We don’t use bleached tallow, so our spring harvested tallow smells more pungent and beefy than winter harvested - that’s due to a diet of fresh green grass vs hay (and yes, both fresh grass fed AND hay -aka dried grass- are considered grass fed!)!

If you’re used to and love ultra processed skin care that’s the exact same jar after jar, season after season, year after year, we may not be the brand for you, moochacho.

Were use fresh ingredients, minimally processed, from independent local farms, from individual animals.

We’re not watered down, homogenized, and stripped of all the goodness present in fresh, whole ingredients.

We’re mootique not boutique & damn proud of it 🐮💋

Love you, amigos. Stay clean 🧼 xox
