🌈 This Day in Q***r History: June 19, Juneteenth and Pride

Today is a unique day on the calendar.

It is Juneteenth, a celebration of freedom and the end of slavery in the United States.

It is also Pride Month, a time when we celebrate the history, resilience, and contributions of LGBTQ people.

While these observances have different origins, they share a common truth:

The struggle for freedom has never belonged to just one group of people.

Throughout American history, Black LGBTQ individuals have stood at the intersection of multiple movements for justice, often helping shape history while receiving far less recognition than they deserved.

Take Bayard Rustin, the chief organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his famous β€œI Have a Dream” speech.

Take Audre Lorde, whose writing challenged America to confront racism, sexism, homophobia, and inequality.

Take Marsha P. Johnson, whose activism helped lay the foundation for the modern LGBTQ rights movement.

Take James Baldwin, whose powerful essays forced America to wrestle with race, identity, and what it means to be truly free.

These individuals did not live separate histories.

They lived both.

Their stories remind us that freedom is not a competition.

The expansion of liberty for one group does not diminish liberty for another.

Instead, each step toward equality strengthens the promise that all people deserve dignity, opportunity, and the freedom to live authentically.

Juneteenth reminds us that freedom delayed is freedom denied.

Pride reminds us that freedom must be defended, expanded, and shared.

Today we honor those who carried both struggles on their shoulders.

Their courage helped move America closer to its ideals, even when those ideals were not yet extended to them.

History is not made by perfect people.

It is made by ordinary people who refuse to stop pushing for a better tomorrow.

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ β€’ β€’ β€’

If today is joyful for you, celebrate that. 🎁

If today is painful, hold on to this. πŸ’œ

You are important.
You are loved.
You are not alone.

Both truths belong here.

πŸ“£ We celebrate q***r history because our stories matter. We’ve always been here, we always will be, and history is a lot less straight than some people would have you believe.

If you enjoy these posts, like, share, and follow for your daily dose of q***r history.

At Congruent Relationships, we believe that clients deserve access to qualified mental health providers who meet their unique needs and have the right to choose the therapist who feels like the best fit for them.

Unfortunately, we are currently facing significant barriers in serving new clients with UPMC insurance. Despite having highly trained, qualified clinicians who meet credentialing requirements, several of our providers have recently been denied credentialing by UPMC. As a result, we have limited ability to accept new UPMC-insured clients for individual, couples, and family therapy services.

This is especially concerning because many of the individuals, couples, and families we serve seek specialized care, including LGBTQ+ affirming therapy, relationship counseling, and attachment-focused treatment. Being told to simply "find another provider" does not always account for the importance of therapeutic fit, specialized training, and client choice.

If you are a UPMC member and are having difficulty accessing care, we encourage you to contact Member Services using the number on the back of your insurance card and ask about provider network access and credentialing restrictions that may be impacting your ability to receive services from your preferred therapist.

For those with Highmark/BCBS insurance, we currently have openings and are accepting new clients. We are open to sliding scale options for potential clients with UPMC until this credentialing mess is figured out.

We remain committed to advocating for accessible, affirming, and high-quality mental health care for our community and hope to see these barriers addressed so that more individuals, couples, and families can access the care they need.

For our current and future clients!

We wanted to make you aware of a major road construction project that may impact travel throughout the Pittsburgh area this summer.

Beginning in mid-July and continuing into early August, PennDOT is scheduled to close a section of I-376 (Parkway East) near the Squirrel Hill Tunnel while crews replace the Commercial Street Bridge. Significant traffic delays and rerouting are expected throughout the region, particularly for those traveling through the East End, Squirrel Hill, Monroeville, Edgewood, Swissvale, and surrounding areas.

Please know that all Congruent Relationships office locations will remain open and operating as usual during this time. However, we encourage you to:

β€’ Allow extra travel time for in-person appointments.
β€’ Check traffic conditions before leaving for your session.
β€’ Contact your therapist if you anticipate being delayed.
β€’ Consider switching to virtual appointments during this period if travel becomes difficult or unpredictable.

We understand that this construction project may create challenges for many of our clients. During the closure, our clinicians will make reasonable efforts to accommodate delays and provide a bit more flexibility than usual when possible. However, to remain respectful of all clients' scheduled appointment times, sessions will still need to end at their regularly scheduled time, even if a late arrival occurs.

If you would prefer to temporarily switch to telehealth appointments during the construction period, please reach out to your therapist. We will do our best to accommodate virtual sessions whenever clinically appropriate and available.

Thank you for your patience and understanding as we navigate this significant infrastructure project. We appreciate your flexibility and look forward to continuing to support you throughout the summer.

πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ We’re Tabling at Forest Hills Pride! πŸ³οΈβ€πŸŒˆ

We are absolutely thrilled to announce that Congruent Relationships will be tabling at this upcoming event!

When: June 28th | 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM

At Congruent Relationships, our core mission is to create affirming and authentic spaces where relationships of all kinds can thrive (especially relationships to self). Events like Forest Hills Pride are the heartbeat of that mission. It’s an incredible opportunity for us to step out of the office and directly into the community, raising awareness about our counseling practice and the support we offer.

Whether you want to learn more about our approach to therapy, ask questions about how we can support you or your loved ones, or just grab some fun swag and say hello - we want to meet you! We are so excited to connect with new faces, celebrate identity, and get the word out about who we are and what we do.

Let's celebrate pride, community, and mental wellness together.

See you there! 🌈✨

We are continuously proud of our team and all of the hard things they are doing!

On this gloomy Monday we want to celebrate the achievements of a few of our staff: Allison Fox and Kensey LeGrand both passed their NCE (National Counselor Exam) and each received their LAPC (Licensed Associate Professional Counselor). They both are now in network with Highmark BCBS and can expand their caseloads to help more clients in need. (UPMC pending) Such milestones in their professional careers πŸŽ‰

In addition, our current clinical interns Matt and Emma will be staying with us throughout their summer semester, and so we are still able to offer low or no cost services to those in need. They have really hit the ground running this semester, and we are excited to see their growth into the fall.

You can learn more about the team through our website: congruentpgh.com/team
