Feeling concerned after parent-teacher conferences? ๐Ÿ’›

Now that your child has had time to settle into the school routine and demonstrate their abilities, you have a clearer picture of how theyโ€™re growing. If something feels off, their teacher has expressed concern in certain areas, or youโ€™re feeling concerned about their progress, now is a great time to ask about support.

Here are some common areas that may come up during conferences:
๐Ÿค Social skills: trouble making friends, connecting with peers, or taking turns in conversations and games

๐Ÿ“š Reading intervention: struggling to read on grade level, avoiding reading, or having a hard time with letters and phonics

โœ๏ธ Occupational therapy: challenges with emotional regulation, tying shoes or using scissors, or transitions between activities

Itโ€™s never too late to start support, and starting early gives your child more time to build skills and confidence this year.

A new school year has begun, and it's important to reinstate or begin some routines of reading and literacy skill-building at home. We have 5 easy ways to start getting your child prepared to make some great strides as a reader this school year:

Tip #2: Designate a family reading time!

Make a commitment to read at a certain time each afternoon or evening as a family. Everyone is off their devices and participates! Modeling reading for your child and making it the โ€œnormโ€ helps them to see reading as a part of their daily routine rather than a chore.

Feeling like your child may need some extra reading support this year? Schedule a free 30 minute reading screening at Sunbreak Therapy Services wiht one of our reading specialists and start the school year off right with reading intervention support!

Book of the Month ๐Ÿ“š

October's Book of the Month is Room on the Broom!

Did you know the vowel team โ€œooโ€ makes two main sounds?

The most common way is โ€œooโ€ like in room and broom
The next is โ€œooโ€ like in cook, book, look, took

BUT! It can also say โ€œoreโ€ when the letter r is at the end of the word like door and floor
And finally and least common, it can say โ€œuhโ€ like in blood and flood!

When in doubt, try out the different sounds, as you keep reading these words, your brain will keep that information and their pronunciation will become natural!

The English language is so interesting!

Losing Your Place on the Page? Try a Reading Tracking Tool

It's easy to get lost while reading โ€” eyes drift to a beautiful picture on the page, lines blur together, and suddenly you've read the same sentence three times (or skipped one entirely). Using a simple tracking tool can help readers stay anchored to exactly where they are on the page.

For beginning readers, tracking with a finger or a fun pointer does double duty: it builds the habit of keeping their place and encourages them to point to each sound as they decode. It turns "reading" into something they can see and touch, one sound at a time.

For more advanced readers, a page full of small text can feel overwhelming fast. A bookmark under each line or a reading window that frames just one line at a time narrows their focus to exactly where they need to be. Instead of relying on their eyes alone to track where they are on the page, they get a physical anchor that reduces frustration and keeps them moving forward with confidence.

Try one of these tracking tools:
Your finger
A bookmark
A reading window
Or, for a little extra fun โ€” a witch's finger! ๐Ÿง™โ€โ™€๏ธ

๐Ÿ‚๐Ÿ“š FALL INTO NEW SKILLS: READING!

Your Child Doesn't Have to Love Reading

Does your child avoid books? Get frustrated during reading? Or insist that they hate reading?

You're not aloneโ€”and it doesn't necessarily mean they'll always feel that way. ๐Ÿ’›

When reading feels difficult, children can start associating books with frustration instead of enjoyment. Sometimes, building confidence comes before building a love of reading.

A few ways to make reading feel more approachable:

๐Ÿ“– Let them choose books about topics they're interested in
๐ŸŽง Listen to audiobooks together
๐Ÿ”ค Celebrate small reading wins
๐Ÿ• Keep reading practice short and positive
๐Ÿ’ฌ Talk about the story instead of focusing only on getting every word right

And remember: needing extra support with reading isn't a failure. The right instruction can help children strengthen foundational skills while rebuilding their confidence along the way.

At Sunbreak, our Reading Specialist provides individualized reading support to help students develop their skills and become more confident readers.

Every reader's journey looks a little different. We're here to help them find their next step. ๐ŸŒŸ
