A world-class achievement powered by teamwork, compassion and the simple act of reading. 📚

Providence Portland’s NICU recently placed second in the world out of 205 NICUs in the international Babies With Books read-a-thon, becoming the only Oregon NICU to earn a top ranking.

For Barbara Gillespie, RN, who has championed the program for years, the success reflects the dedication of an entire team.

"Having our executive board come to read is a huge morale booster. We were so excited when we found out that the team was coming."

Reading to newborns helps support bonding, reduce stress and establish healthy routines that families can continue at home.

As Barbara shared, "The read-a-thon helps parents bond with their baby while relieving stress. It also starts them on a nice routine that they can continue when they go home."

The achievement is especially meaningful as Barbara approaches retirement after a remarkable career in neonatal nursing.

"One person cannot do this alone, so success involves motivating the staff and patients. It's a real team effort where nurses and caregivers are helping read to babies and encouraging parents."
