Forty years ago, Legacy’s midwifery program began with two midwives working out of a double-wide trailer on the Legacy Emanuel Medical Center campus. Today, 19 midwives are part of a program built on four decades of care, trust and relationships with patients and families.

Since 1986, the program has grown largely through word of mouth, guided by a philosophy of treating every person with respect and providing care that recognizes their individual circumstances, priorities and needs. That approach has helped Legacy Medical Group–Midwifery serve patients and families from many different backgrounds and experiences.

To celebrate this milestone, current and former midwives, including some who were part of the program in its earliest days, gathered at Legacy Emanuel Medical Center. Former patients also joined the celebration, reflecting the relationships that have been built throughout the program's history.

We’re grateful for the people who helped build the program, the patients and families who have placed their trust in our midwives and those continuing this work today.

Is there a Legacy midwife or a moment from your experience that you'll always remember? We'd love to hear about it in the comments. 💜

For Christine Barlow Reed, CNM, some of the most rewarding moments in her work with Legacy Medical Group–Midwifery come from the relationships she builds with patients. 💜

“I feel privileged that, as a midwife, my patients will often open up to me about their fears, hopes, what's going on at home and in their relationships.”

That trust helps patients feel heard and supported throughout their care.

For Kaci, feeling empowered was an important part of her experience with Legacy Medical Group–Midwifery.

Throughout both of her pregnancies, she found support and partnership in her midwives, especially when her second pregnancy brought unexpected challenges.

“I would definitely recommend Legacy Midwives to my friends and to anyone giving birth. Midwives in the hospital offer that bridge for people who are looking for a soft landing to what a hospital can offer.”

As Legacy Medical Group–Midwifery marks 40 years of caring for patients and families, National Midwifery Week is a chance to celebrate the relationships at the heart of its work. Watch Kaci’s story to hear what her experience with Legacy’s midwives has meant to her. 💜

It’s National Midwifery Week! 💜

This year’s celebration is extra special as Legacy Medical Group–Midwifery marks 40 years of caring for patients and families in our communities.

Throughout the week, we’re celebrating the certified nurse-midwives who are part of that history, including Wendy Berger, CNM.

For Wendy, one of the most rewarding parts of being a midwife is helping patients better understand their care and recognize their own power.

“Knowledge is power, and I want the people I care for to leave their visits with me, and their birth experience, recognizing how powerful they are.”

After more than three decades as a nurse-midwife, Wendy says she can’t imagine herself in another profession.

What needs to change to improve breast cancer outcomes for Black women?

Dr. Nathalie Johnson, senior medical director of Legacy Cancer Institute, recently joined KOIN 6 News to discuss the disparities Black women face with breast cancer and the improvements needed to help bring mortality rates down.

As both a practicing breast surgeon and breast cancer survivor, Dr. Johnson brings a personal and professional perspective to breast cancer care. Throughout her career, she has been a strong advocate for breast cancer screening, early detection and improving outcomes for patients.

On Oct. 3, she’ll bring that perspective to Changing the Odds: Black Women, Breast Cancer & the Power of Participation, a community event presented by Legacy Cancer Institute and Pink Lemonade Project, focused on breast cancer disparities and the importance of representation and participation in research.

We are pleased to announce that Legacy and UnitedHealthcare have reached an agreement on a new contract. This means all Legacy providers and facilities will remain in-network for UnitedHealthcare members.

We recognize the stress and uncertainty many of our patients experienced during the negotiation process.

We are truly thankful that we can continue to be here to serve our patients when they need us.

I am happy to share that Legacy has reached an agreement on a new contract with UnitedHealthcare, effective October 1, 2026. UnitedHealthcare members can continue to access all Legacy hospitals, clinics and services, as well as Legacy GoHealth Urgent Care centers, at in-network rates and benefits.

Black women face a nearly 40% higher breast cancer mortality rate. But that number is only part of the story.
That’s why it’s important to have conversations about what contributes to these disparities and what we can do to help change them.

On Oct. 3, Legacy Cancer Institute and Pink Lemonade Project will bring Black women together for Changing the Odds: Black Women, Breast Cancer & the Power of Participation, a free community event focused on breast cancer awareness, representation in research and improving outcomes.

Survivors, advocates and experts will come together to share information, experiences and perspectives on breast cancer and the power of participation.

The more we know, the more we can do to help change the odds.

With less than two weeks left to reach an agreement that protects patients’ access to care, Legacy Health and UnitedHealthcare have not yet reached a new contract agreement.

If an agreement is not reached, thousands of patients could lose in-network access to some Legacy services beginning Oct. 1. Emergency care and care for Silverton patients will not be affected.

We understand this uncertainty can be difficult for patients and families. Legacy remains committed to finding a solution that provides fair and equitable reimbursement and continued access to quality, cost-effective care for our patients.

Read our latest community letter for more information about the negotiations, what this could mean for your care and how you can help.

With less than two weeks left to reach a solution that protects patients’ access to high-quality health care at Legacy Health, UnitedHealthcare has still not agreed to a new 2027 contract. If our contract expires on Oct. 1, Legacy’s hospital services and provider-based clinics will no longer be ...

A record-setting year for our annual The Drive Benefit Golf Tournament! ⛳

Last week, we raised more than $155,000 to support the purchase of an Automated Breast Ultrasound System (ABUS) at Legacy Mount Hood Medical Center.

We’re grateful to our Presenting Ace Sponsor, Lease Crutcher Lewis, and Double Eagle Sponsors MacDonald-Miller Facility Solutions, Pacific Office Automation and Total Mechanical, as well as every sponsor and donor who helped make this year’s tournament possible.

Their support goes beyond helping provide new technology. It helps our teams continue delivering exceptional care and making a difference in the lives of the patients and families we serve.

Thank you for helping us score a win for breast health in our community. ❤️
