We’re just 1️⃣ week away from the 22nd gala and we’re celebrating with a little blast from the past! ✨

You may remember Jake Dering from Nike X in 2013. At just 8 years old, after enduring 19 surgeries to treat a rare genetic condition called Otopalatodigital Syndrome type II, Jake designed his own custom shoes featuring inspiring words like “Be Brave” and “Never Give Up.”

Fast-forward to today: Jake is a senior at University of Oregon, in product design (fitting, right?!), has recently built a beautiful custom wood cabinet, and has one heck of a golf game! ⛳️

Recently, Jake and his mom returned to Doernbecher to drop off a toy donation. While he was here, Jake even got to hand out stuffies to a few kiddos in the lobby. Being at the hospital was a little hard, but this time, Jake was here as a donor rather than a patient. And he shared, "it felt really good to give back."

Jake’s story is a beautiful reminder that the impact of our community reaches far beyond the hospital walls. We’re so grateful to share this new chapter with him and to see all the ways he continues to grow, create and inspire. 💛

Four-month-old Sylas is already showing the world what resilience looks like. He loves playing with his feet, giggling and being a true cuddle bug, according to his mom. 💛

Sylas was born with a cleft lip and palate and has spent the first months of his life traveling more than four hours each way from Grants Pass to OHSU Doernbecher Children’s Hospital for specialized care. Between specialized feeding techniques, frequent medical travel and wearing his NAM (Nasoalveolar Molding) appliance to prepare his mouth and nose, his journey takes a lot of coordination — but Sylas handles every appointment with incredible bravery.

His family says the care team here has made the journey feel safe, supportive and hopeful. Orthodontist Dr. Judah Garfinkle and audiologist Heather Durham have become special parts of Sylas’s care. One favorite memory came when Sylas tried his hearing aid for the first time. Though he was tired and crying, he stopped the moment it was placed on him — and started giggling. Lately, he’s really found his voice, too, and loves “talking” to everyone who looks his way!

Now, Sylas is preparing for his first repair surgery at Doernbecher later this fall. His family also entered him in the national Baby of the Year competition are are looking for community support. They hope his story can help raise awareness for cleft warriors (learn more and vote at: https://babyoftheyear.org/2026/sylas-58f2 📲).

Their advice to other families? Take it one day, one appointment and one smile at a time.

“These babies possess a strength that will blow you away,” Sylas’ mom, Jade, said. “Lean on your village, trust your care team, and remember that your little warrior’s resilience will inspire you every single day.”

And Sylas’s song? You Are My Sunshine. A fitting choice for a little boy whose smile brings so much light. ☀️

As fall drifts into season, one football star is finding a new heart for the game he loves. 🏉♥️

When 13-year-old Charlie was born, his family learned he had heart disease. They knew he would eventually need surgery to replace his pulmonary valve, but they hoped to wait as long as possible — allowing Charlie to grow up without his heart condition disrupting his normal life. Eventually, that normalcy began to slip away.

As an avid athlete, Charlie noticed his heart getting in the way during sports. He struggled to breathe and became discouraged that his body wasn’t keeping up with him. His mom, Megan, noticed a change too. Her driven, joyful and funny pr***en had become increasingly sullen.

With the support of his care team at OHSU Doernbecher, Charlie and his family felt confident it was time to make a change. In fact, it was Charlie’s idea. His goal was simple: fix his heart so he could play football again.

The procedure was a success thanks to our new hybrid operating suite and Charlie’s care team. Remarkably, it didn't require open-heart surgery either. Doctors replaced his heart valve from within his heart, avoiding a chest incision, scar, cardiopulmonary bypass and the pain associated with traditional surgery. But there was still one thing Charlie hadn’t expected: with his heart healthier, tackle football would no longer be an option.

So, once again, Charlie pivoted. Instead of walking away from the sport he loved, he found a new way to be part of it — coaching and mentoring young athletes and helping them find their own love for the game.

Our puppy friends come and visit with patients to help with socialization, lift spirits and get some cuddles. Can you imagine if your treatment also includes a puppy pile? 🥰 We're ready for it.

A look back over 100 years of Doernbecher...

From the very beginning, the Doernbecher family made one thing clear: every child would receive care, regardless of their family’s ability to pay. That promise still guides us today.
