“In dire circumstances, our patients actually need us to go to them. In these rare moments when patients cannot be extricated or extricated in a timely manner, it’s on us to save their life.”

On May 24 a car-size boulder had rolled on top of a climber descending Mount Hood above Timberline Lodge. The patient was alive and talking, but first responders struggled to extricate him as his condition was worsening in the cold mountain air, 6,500 feet above sea level.

Dr. Albert Chi and his team from OHSU planned to amputate the patient’s leg to pull him off the mountain and save his life.

“There are not many places where all of this care is available in one location. We worked together every step of the way to weigh the risks and benefits and carefully consider order of operations to ensure she had the best outcomes.”

A feat of collaboration made Everest’s journey home possible, including specialized care from Doernbecher’s Fetal Care Team, Bridges Pediatric Palliative Care Program, NICU, PICU, and cardiology, pulmonology, otolaryngology, gastroenterology, anesthesiology and neurosurgery teams, as well as countless nurses and medical staff who provided support along the way.

OHSU houses these specialties under one roof, so families like the Andersons can get their baby’s complex care in one place rather than having to travel out of state, adding expense and stress to an already difficult endeavor.

OHSU Doernbecher Children's Hospital provides broad range of specialized care under one roof, so Oregon families can receive care close to home.
