Happy Wishbone Day! And very exciting news recently from the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation: Oregon Governor Tina Kotek signed a proclamation declaring May 3 - 9 to be Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) Awareness Week. This overlaps not only with Wishbone Day but also National OI Week, May 2 - 9. From our own Bryan Menapace, M.D.:

"Here at Shriners Children's Portland, we are excited to celebrate! Our multidisciplinary bone health team cares for children with OI from birth through age 21. We provide a multitude of services including bisphosphonate infusions, genetic testing, a pediatric-specific bone density DEXA scanner, a walk-in fracture clinic and comprehensive orthopedic surgeries for arm, leg and spine correction, including telescopic rods and other growth-friendly implants."

Shriners Children’s Portland is proudly celebrating Youth Sports Week as part of ESPN Citizenship's Take Back Sports initiative.

We are proud to be one of the recipients of the ESPN Take Back Sports Innovation Challenge, and we work hard to ensure that kids, parents and coaches can recognize the signs of sports burnout to help keep our young athletes in the game!

"My prosthetic leg doesn’t slow me down. If anything, it makes me tougher, stronger and maybe just a little more competitive." - Allison

Born with fibular hemimelia, Allison is absolutely crushing it these days in softball, bowling and more. April is Limb Loss and Limb Difference Awareness month, and we are honored to be part of her journey and so proud to have her as a Patient Ambassador, representing our hospital as a shining example of living your best life and letting nothing slow you down. In her own words:

"Shriners Children's gave me more than medical care. They gave me confidence, independence and the belief that being different doesn’t mean being limited." 💪💙

In honor of National Volunteer Week, we would like to highlight two of our many long-time volunteers who give their time and resources to make our hospital a better place. Meet Rod and Sherry:

Rod is a Shriner with the Al Kader Shrine in Wilsonville and is a retired junior high school teacher with 32 years in the Beaverton school district. He has volunteered at the hospital both as a driver and an ambassador for 21 years, bringing laughter and joy to patients and their families.

Sherry is a Daughter of the Nile and is a retired secretary. She has also been a volunteer for 21 years, and is currently the coordinator of the Sewing Ladies, a group of women who provide inpatient quilts, transition quilts, pillowcases, wheelchair and walker bags, personal bags, patient shorts, capes at Halloween and other specific treatment requests from doctors and therapy departments.

Rod and Sherry also volunteer with the National Forest Service. They come to the hospital on Tuesdays and together have contributed over 13,000 hours of service to Shriners Children’s Portland. Thank you for your service!

Meet Sarita, a scoliosis patient from Panama we were lucky enough to host and care for here in Portland. After they returned home, her mother shared a beautiful letter with us ♥️

"The other day my daughter looked in the mirror, smiled, and said to me, 'Wow, Mom, it’s gone,' pointing to the deformity in her ribs and back that the scoliosis had left behind. I was speechless; I cried out of sheer relief.

Dr. Paranjape and Dr. Welborn, thank you for your precision and kindness. To the nurses, caregivers, therapists, Child Life specialists, housekeeping staff, security, cafeteria staff, hospital teachers and assistants: thank you for treating us with love and dignity. You do something with the children that feels like a miracle: you give them back their quality of life."
