📚🏀 Back to school means back to routines…but is your family already running on empty?

On this week’s Wellness Wednesday, Renee Best, LCMHCS, LPCS, joined The Sports Shop in studio for a timely conversation: School, Sports, and Sanity: Keeping the Whole Family in the Game.

The new school year brings early mornings, homework, practices, carpools, activities, work schedules and everything in between. And when everyone is constantly on the go, stress and burnout can creep in before we even realize it.

One sign Renee says we shouldn’t overlook? Irritability. If the smallest things suddenly have you on edge, it may be a sign that you’re at capacity and need to intentionally make room to rest and decompress.

Renee also shares practical reminders for families navigating the school year:

📵 Put the phones away and make time to reconnect as a family
💬 Keep communication open and pay attention when your child’s behavior changes
😴 Prioritize adequate rest, especially for student athletes
🏀 Remember: they are students first and athletes second
🧘🏾‍♀️ Find small pockets of time to rest, reset and recharge
❤️ Parents, take care of yourselves too

Even one phone free dinner each week can create space to slow down, check in and stay connected.

As schedules fill up this school year, remember that keeping the whole family in the game also means knowing when it’s time to rest.

🏀🏈 When sports become your identity, what happens when the sport is gone?

Rasheedah Fletcher, LCMHCA, joined The Sports Shop Radio Podcast to discuss identity formation from childhood to adulthood and its connection to athletics and mental health.

For young men facing pressure to be great, earn scholarships, go pro or “make it” for their families, athletics can quickly become tied to their sense of purpose and self-worth. But when the dream changes or the game ends, that loss of identity can have a very real impact on mental health.

Rasheedah shares how a lack of identity and purpose can show up as depression in young and adult men and why developing the person behind the athlete matters just as much as developing their game.

Today is International Youth Day! ✨

Young people are navigating so much: School pressure, friendships, family changes, identity, social media, anxiety, and major transitions can all have an impact on their mental health.

Sometimes, supporting a young person doesn't mean having the right answer or knowing exactly what to say. Sometimes it means listening, being patient, validating what they're feeling, and reminding them that they don't have to navigate everything alone.

Creating safe spaces where young people feel heard and supported matters.

Today, we’re reminding parents, caregivers, educators, and other adults to check in, listen without judgment, and make space for honest conversations about mental health.

Every young person deserves to feel seen, heard, and supported.❤️

PTSD doesn’t always look the way people expect.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) can affect anyone who has experienced or witnessed trauma. It’s not limited to military service and it isn’t a sign of weakness. It can impact relationships, work, sleep, physical health, and everyday life. PTSD Awareness Presentation.pdf

This PTSD Awareness Month, let’s replace judgment with understanding, stigma with support, and silence with conversation.

Healing is possible. With the right support, treatment, and compassion, recovery can happen. If you or someone you love is struggling, know that you don’t have to face it alone. ❤️

At Anew U Counseling Services PLLC, we’re committed to providing a safe space for healing, growth, and hope.

Had such a great time with the young men of the Omega C.H.A.M.P.S program! 💜 We hosted an interactive Jeopardy-style conversation around social media and mental health, and the boys showed up, engaged, and did an amazing job!

Moments like these remind us how important it is to create safe spaces for youth to learn, connect, and have real conversations. We’re grateful to be a part of it!
