Discipline is not about control. It is about teaching. Positive discipline guides children by first building a safe, connected relationship, because kids learn best when they feel secure. It builds self-esteem, teaches emotional regulation, and helps children develop the tools to handle stress in healthy ways.

Connection before correction. That is the foundation. Ellison Center supports caregivers in building these skills every day.

The first five years of life are unlike any other. Every experience, every relationship, every moment of stress or safety is absorbed and stored. At Ellison Center, we are here because the people responsible for children in those years deserve real support, not a system built around profit. We are a nonprofit because this work is about people, not margins. If you work with young children or know a family that could use support, we would love to connect.

The care young children receive depends on the professionals around them. Ellison Center invests in that workforce through Child Care Consultations, Reflective Consultations, Lunch and Learn webinars, and an annual full-day training built around the specialized skills that infant and early childhood mental health work requires.

Going upstream is harder – It's also the only way to make a lasting difference.

At Ellison Center, we exist to address the causes that put children and families in high-stress situations before those situations become crises. We do that through direct mental health services, caregiver support, and by training and equipping the professionals who work alongside families every day.

If you believe in the kind of investment that starts early and builds something that lasts, we would love to have you in our corner. Learn more at ellisoncenter.org.

Starting kindergarten or moving to a new childcare setting is a significant shift for kids, and some will need extra support to navigate it well. Pay attention to your child if they show signs of stress during this transition, such as sleep changes, increased clinginess or intense emotional reactions.

Ellison Center offers free, one-on-one Caregiver Support Visits for families of children eight and under in central Minnesota – available in English, Spanish, and Somali.

Ellison Center is a special place. We work with families who are under enormous stress, and with children who are stuck on a developmental path that is not serving them.

Our job is to help get them unstuck: empowering kids and caregivers with the tools to respond to trauma, big or small, and making sure every support possible is in place around them. That is what we show up to do every day.

Summer does not have to be complicated to be meaningful.

Sometimes the best family time is the simple kind: a walk around the block, a game everyone makes up as they go, or a story shared before bed, in the backyard or over lunch at the park.

A few easy ways to build connection this summer:

🍃Go outside.

Put the screens down for a bit and notice what is around you. Count trees on a walk. Look for rocks, leaves or bugs. Play a running game in the yard. Even a short stretch of time outdoors can help children and adults slow down, reset and feel better together.

🧸Play something.

Board games are great, but children are also natural game-makers. Let each person in the family invent a game and teach everyone else how to play. It is a simple way to practice creativity, listening, turn-taking and patience without making it feel like a lesson.

📖Read together.

A good story gives a family something to share. For younger children, act out parts of the book. Use silly voices. Let them guess what happens next. Reading can happen before bed, first thing in the morning, outside on a blanket or anywhere else summer takes you.

The point is not to create a perfect summer. The point is to make small, steady moments where children feel safe, seen and connected to the people who love them.

This Pride month, Ellison Center is thinking about the children in our waiting room today who will one day identify as LGBTQ+. Research is clear that children who feel genuinely seen, accepted and loved by their caregivers develop stronger emotional foundations that carry them through every stage of life, including how they come to understand their own identity. Early childhood is when those patterns form. The work we do with families right now is protective, not just for today but for the years ahead. Ellison Center serves every child and every family, and we are proud to do so.

This past Wednesday, our Executive Director, Paul Tatro, had the honor of being present at the game. The focus of the night was . With the support provided by and an auction put on by the St. Cloud Rox, $5,400 was raised to support Ellison Center that night!

The reality is, health insurance companies don’t fully fund clinical costs of the mental health treatments provided at Ellison Center. This is a system-wide problem for any non-profit organization attempting to provide decent levels of mental health care.

For Ellison Center, there is an unreimbursed gap of around $130 per session. This generous donation of $5,400 covers the insurance shortfall on approximately 40 to 45 therapy sessions for young children and their families! This is real clinical time that would otherwise go unfunded, and we are incredibly grateful for the generosity on behalf of those families and very young kids. Thank you St. Cloud Rox and Newport Healthcare for your support of mental health services in Central Minnesota!
