Varicose veins have a way of getting filed under "deal with it later." Here's why later gets harder.

The valves inside those veins are supposed to close and keep blood moving. When they stop closing, blood pools, the vein stretches larger, and your body starts forming extra veins around the problem. A question we get often: "What is VenaSeal?"

VenaSeal is a medical adhesive — a specialized glue — made by Medtronic. It's used to close the greater saphenous vein, which is one of the major veins behind varicose veins and chronic venous insufficiency. It's one of four main treatment options.

The others are radiofrequency ablation (RFA), laser therapy, and Varithena, a foam-based treatment. All four are minimally invasive, FDA-approved, and effective at treating the same condition.

In our practice, we tend to lean on RFA — it's considered the gold standard for vein closure — along with Varithena, which tends to be better tolerated. We discuss VenaSeal case-by-case when it's the right fit for the patient.
