Topic: Earned Security: How to Build the Secure Attachment You Didn't Grow Up With
"I'm too much." "I'm not enough." "I just have bad luck with people."
If you didn't grow up with a secure attachment style, it's easy to internalize those stories as the truth about who you are.
They're not. And attachment research backs that up.
People who didn't experience secure attachment in childhood can still develop it as adults. Researchers call this earned security, and it's a real, documented process, not a motivational concept.
Here's what it actually involves:
→ Building awareness of your patterns (without using them to shame yourself)
→ Learning to regulate your nervous system, because attachment insecurity lives in the body, not just the mind
→ Practicing secure behaviors even when they feel unfamiliar or uncomfortable
→ Doing this through relationship, not in isolation
That last one surprises people. You don't earn security by journaling harder or reading more books. You earn it through repeated relational experiences that teach your nervous system: connection is safe.
In our latest blog, we break down what earned secure attachment actually feels like from the inside, the full process it moves through, what it is not (hint: it's not emotional detachment or hyper-independence), and the quiet signs it's already starting for you.
