The Dignity Fund seeks to ensure San Francisco seniors and adults with disabilities are able to live with dignity, independence, and choice in their homes

The Dignity Fund Coalition is the advocacy body that helped get Prop I on the ballot and continues to meet to advocate for the Dignity Fund and its services. The coalition meets every 4th Wednesday of the month from 2:30pm-4:00pm. The meetings are open to public and you may acquire the zoom link through our website.

No Mass Layoffs. But Seniors and People with Disabilities Are Still Paying the Price.

Mayor Daniel Lurie’s proposed budget may have avoided the large-scale layoffs many feared, but it still includes $8.9 million in cuts to programs serving seniors and people with disabilities — including cuts to technology access, employment assistance, legal services, geriatric mental health programs, and other vital supports that help people remain independent, connected, and housed.

The fight is far from over.

On Monday, June 15, members of the Dignity Fund Coalition, older adults, people with disabilities, caregivers, and advocates will gather at San Francisco City Hall for the Senior & Disability Day of Action. Community members will share firsthand stories about what these cuts would mean for their lives and call on city leaders to restore funding before the budget is finalized.

Programs like Community Living Campaign (CLC) create vital opportunities for older adults and people with disabilities to stay connected, learn new skills, and remain active in their communities—from technology classes to social activities that reduce isolation.

When funding for community-based services is reduced, programs like these can face cuts—impacting the connections and support so many people rely on every day.

What’s Next in the Fight for San Francisco’s Budget?

Hundreds of residents, nonprofit leaders, labor unions, seniors, disability advocates, caregivers, and community organizations have already rallied, marched, delivered postcards, and spoken out against proposed cuts to services that thousands of San Franciscans depend on every day. But June will be one of the most important months in the fight to protect the Dignity Fund and other critical community programs.

This month’s Dignity Fund Coalition meeting will help prepare advocates for the next stage of the campaign as the Mayor’s proposed budget moves through the Board of Supervisors. Community members are strongly encouraged to attend hearings, offer public comment, and continue to show city leaders that San Franciscans are paying attention.

Upcoming Budget Dates:

• June 1 — The Mayor’s proposed budget is officially released.

• June 2 — Election Day. Propositions C and D could impact future city budgets and funding priorities.

• June 5 — The Board of Supervisors discusses the Mayor’s proposed budget, including whether supervisors will push back against proposed cuts.

• June 10 — The Board of Supervisors Budget & Appropriations Committee reviews the Department of Disability and Aging Services (DAS) budget and other key departments.

• June 15 — People’s Budget Day of Action, focused on protecting services for seniors and people with disabilities. Stay tuned for more information.

• June 22 — The Board of Supervisors makes recommendations on additions and reductions to the DAS budget.

• June 25 — Public Comment Day.

SAN FRANCISCO CAN’T AFFORD TO CUT SENIOR SERVICES
Older adults and people with disabilities make up over 25% of San Francisco—and they’re the fastest-growing group, especially those over 80. Yet too many are already on the edge:
• 30% live alone
• Over 60% are people of color
• 46% don’t have enough income to meet basic needs
• 48% of the city’s homeless adults are over 50
Community-based programs—like meals, wellness checks, housing support, and social connection—are what keep people stable. They are proven, preventative solutions that reduce costly hospitalizations, nursing home placements, and homelessness while improving health and well-being.
Now, these same services are at risk.
🗓️ Daniel Lurie has until June 1 to finalize the budget. There is still time to make sure these cuts don’t harm seniors and people with disabilities.
