The fight for safer products isn’t over. 💪

This year, we fought to get toxic chemicals like phthalates and bisphenols out of food packaging through AB 1148. While the bill fell short, it advanced from the Assembly to the Senate—an important step forward for safer food packaging in California.
And there’s still an opportunity to take action.

👉AB 1604, our safer receipts bill, is now on Governor Newsom’s desk. The bill would get BPA and BPS out of receipt paper, helping reduce our everyday exposure to toxic chemicals.

🧪 New research is looking at “forever chemicals” and teen girls’ reproductive health.

A study out of the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences tracked 38 adolescent girls (ages ~12-13) over more than a year, measuring PFAS levels in their blood alongside daily hormone markers and menstrual cycle data.

Four PFAS chemicals — used for decades in things like nonstick cookware, water-resistant fabrics, and food packaging — showed up in nearly all participants. One of them, PFBS, was linked to higher levels of estrone-3-glucuronide, a hormone tied to ovarian estrogen production. The researchers didn’t find a connection between PFAS and menstrual cycle length overall.

This is early-stage evidence, a small study, but it adds to a growing body of research asking whether chronic, everyday exposure to “forever chemicals” is quietly interfering with how girls’ bodies produce and regulate hormones during puberty. Hormone exposure timing and levels are a piece of the breast cancer risk puzzle, which is why BCPP keeps tracking this research closely.

The bigger picture: PFAS don’t break down in the environment or the body — hence “forever chemicals” — and they’re nearly impossible for individuals to avoid entirely. That’s why BCPP pushes for policy-level solutions, not just consumer vigilance.

🚨 NEW PESTICIDE APPROVAL. The EPA has approved trifludimoxazin — a “forever chemical” (PFAS) herbicide — for use on major food crops including corn, wheat, oats, soybeans, peanuts, citrus, apples, and almonds.

What you should know:
⚠️ The EPA itself classifies trifludimoxazin as having “suggestive evidence of carcinogenic potential,” based on thyroid tumors found in animal studies.
⚠️ It’s expected to break down into 12 different PFAS compounds that persist in our air, water, and soil...for generations.
⚠️ This isn’t the first time the EPA tried to approve trifludimoxazin: the same chemical was approved in 2021, then pulled after environmental and health groups sued. Now it’s back.
⚠️ The Center for Biological Diversity (Center for Biological Diversity) and Center for Food Safety (Center for Food Safety) have already filed suit again, arguing the EPA didn’t adequately assess cancer risk to farmworkers or the risk to communities from contaminated food and water.

They accumulate in our bodies, our water, and our communities, often affecting the most vulnerable among us first.

🚨AB 1604 is ONE signature away from becoming law!

The bill to get BPA and other bisphenols out of paper receipts passed the California Legislature with overwhelming support, including a 36–0 Senate vote.

Many paper receipts are coated with bisphenols like BPA and BPS, hormone-disrupting chemicals that can enter our bodies through skin contact. For workers who handle receipts all day, repeated exposure is especially concerning.

California is so close to a historic win for safer, non-toxic receipts.

🧴 Your product label might not be telling you the whole story.

A new study tested 113 personal care and cleaning products sold in the U.S. using nontargeted chemical analysis (a method that screens for thousands of chemicals instead of just checking a pre-approved list).

What the study found:
⚠️ 98% of products contained chemicals NOT listed on the label
⚠️ 85% had at least one unlabeled chemical with known or suspected health hazards
⚠️ 1 in 4 products contradicted their own marketing claims — including “phthalate-free” products that actually contained phthalates
⚠️ On average, products contained 51 chemicals, but only 16 were listed on the label.

We shouldn’t need a chemistry degree to shop safely. Ingredient lists matter, but they aren’t the full picture. We need stronger oversight that requires testing of finished products, not just disclosure of what companies choose to report.

BCPP will keep pushing for the policies that get hazardous chemicals out of everyday products in the first place.

: Back in the 2000s, BCPP fought to get phthalates out of kids’ toys - rubber duckies included.

Phthalates are chemicals that make plastic soft and squishy, but are also linked to breast cancer and hormone disruption. Kids were literally chewing toys and ingesting this toxic chemical.

BCPP got loud about this health hazard by testifying, organizing, building a coalition with parents and health advocates - and partnering directly with Senator Feinstein. We led winning campaigns in California and nationwide, getting phthalate protections written into law. We helped secure the CA Toxic Toys Ban in 2007 and the Federal Toxic Toys Ban in 2008.

Almost 20 years later, those laws are still protecting kids.
