Protecting our health from toxic chemicals should be a top priority — but right now, Congress is considering proposals that would gut the very law designed to keep us safe.

The Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA) is our nation’s bedrock chemical safety law. It requires the Environmental Protection Agency to review chemicals for safety before they’re widely used in the products found in our homes, schools, and workplaces. Strong chemical safety protections help prevent harmful exposures before they cause cancer, infertility, learning disabilities, and other serious health harms.

Today, our partners at the Alliance for Health and Safe Chemicals — advocates, health professionals, veterans, and community leaders — went directly to Capitol Hill to defend TSCA and make clear that public health must come before chemical industry profits.

Americans overwhelmingly support strong chemical safety protections. We expect our government to stand on the side of people, not polluters.

Congress must reject efforts to weaken TSCA. These protections exist for a reason, and they’re worth fighting for.

Good News! AB 1604, our bill banning toxic bisphenols from receipt paper, passed the Assembly floor by a vote of 70-2!

This strong support from policymakers across the table is proof that toxic exposures affect everyone, and that when we make our voices heard and demand safer products, we can make real change happen. Thank you to everyone who has helped spread the word, sent a letter, and shown support for our efforts to protect public health.

Did you know the Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is one of our frontline defenders against harmful products — including chemicals linked to breast cancer risk?

Now, a proposed budget would transfer the CPSC to HHS, cut its funding by 10%, and reduce staff by 14%. That's fewer resources to investigate dangerous products and protect our communities.

138+ consumer and public health organizations, including BCPP, are calling on Congress to keep the CPSC independent, adequately funded, and fully staffed.

Think about the last receipt you touched - at the grocery store, gas station, coffee shop, etc. Maybe you stuffed it in your pocket. Maybe your kid grabbed it off the counter.

Most people don’t know that 80% of paper receipts are coated with toxic bisphenol chemicals that absorb through your skin on contact.

Bisphenols mimic estrogen in the body and have been linked to breast cancer, reproductive harm, and other serious health effects.

One study found that touching a single receipt for just 10 seconds results in BPS exposure above the level Europe considers safe.

The solution isn’t to live in fear of receipts. It’s to:
✔ Go digital when you can
✔ Wash hands after handling receipts
✔ Support legislation — like California’s AB 1604 — that bans the whole bisphenol class from receipt paper

Individual workarounds are a patch, but a health-protective policy is the best solution.

A bill that could get toxic bisphenols off California receipts is at a critical vote. We need you to make some noise before May 29th!

This important bill will be sent to the Assembly floor for a vote any day now, because it MUST be voted on before May 29 to continue on its legislative journey.

AB 1604, the Prohibiting Bisphenols in Receipts Act, would ban the whole class of bisphenol chemicals from thermal receipt paper in California. That means BPA and BPS — not just the most famous one, but the whole toxic family.

Why it matters:
🧾 80% of receipts are coated with bisphenol chemicals that absorb through your skin on contact
🧾 Touching one receipt for 10 seconds results in BPS exposure above Europe’s safety threshold
🧾 Cashiers, most of them women of childbearing age, handle hundreds of receipts every day
🧾 Bisphenol-coated receipts contaminate the recycling stream, ending up in napkins and toilet paper

The good news: the bill has already passed two committees unanimously. Safer alternatives already exist, and 20% of receipts are already bisphenol-free.

Change is doable. Now AB 1604 needs to pass the full Assembly by May 29th.

A concerned dad tested his daughter’s squishy toy, and VOC levels literally maxed out the meter.

He filmed himself putting two into a plastic bag with an air-quality meter that measures volatile organic compounds, also known as VOCs. Testing showed that the toys’ readings were more toxic than a can of paint.

VOCs aren’t just a “bad smell” problem. They have been linked to breast cancer risk, and they’re showing up in toys marketed to 3-year-olds.

As Jordan Collinet (.the.limits) put it: “Kids are putting these up to their faces in their mouths, they’re busting them, the fillings coming out and going all over the place.”

This isn’t a new issue. BCPP has been raising the alarm on toxic chemicals in kids’ products for decades, and the science keeps backing us up. We’ve secured a federal ban on phthalates in kids’ toys, BPA in baby bottles, and we continue to do the work to protect future generations.
