Meet Cat, co-founder of COCOLAB 🦷💗 For our October Shopping Guide, we’re spotlighting the people behind the brands working to make personal care safer.

COCOLAB began 12 years ago when Cat’s sister, a dentist, was tired of treating cavities that could have been prevented. Together they asked: could better design make oral care something people actually look forward to?

Prevention is personal for Cat. She lost her college mentor to breast cancer, and she was later diagnosed with angiosarcoma, a rare cancer that started in her breast. Today she’s cancer-free, and determined that fewer people go through what she did.

“We need to understand why so many young people are getting cancer and how we can prevent it in the first place.”

At COCOLAB, that means scrutinizing ingredients, independently testing products, and weighing their impact on human health and the environment. In Cat’s words: health needs to come before profit, and brands shouldn’t wait for regulations to catch up when credible science reveals something harmful.

As Breast Cancer Prevention Month wraps up and Election Day gets closer, here’s something worth remembering: policy protects our health. 🗳️

We’ve seen it work before. After lead was phased out of gasoline and household products in the 1970s, lead levels in children’s bodies dropped dramatically.

Now we’re facing a new threat. Endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) hide in everyday products (like personal care products and food packaging) and interfere with our hormones. Research links them to girls getting their periods earlier, falling s***m counts, and rising breast cancer rates, especially in younger women.

Regulation worked then. It can work again.

This Month, we’re proud to highlight Deb Cole, breast cancer survivor, founder of New England Peaks for Prevention, and our spokesperson for protecting the Toxic Substances Control Act (TSCA).

For Deb, prevention is personal. She wants her daughters and future generations to be able to trust that the air, water and products in their lives are safe.

🧪TSCA is our nation’s bedrock chemical safety law, meant to stop harmful exposures before they cause harm. Right now, the chemical industry is pushing Congress to weaken it. Exposure to certain toxic chemicals has been linked to increased cancer risk, so prevention can’t wait.

Breast cancer is now the leading cause of cancer death among women ages 20–39. Diagnoses in women under 50 have climbed steadily for two decades, and young women are increasingly being diagnosed at later, more dangerous stages.

Why is this happening? Genetics and lifestyle don’t tell the whole story. Scientists have identified more than 900 chemicals relevant to breast cancer, and most of them are ones we’re exposed to in our daily lives, in our food, water, homes, and the products we put on our bodies.

Today’s young women are the first generation exposed to these chemicals during infancy and puberty, the critical windows when breast tissue is developing.

The good news: what’s in our environment can be changed. That’s why BCPP works to change laws, push companies to make safer products, and give you the science you need to protect yourself and the people you love.

Here’s another number worth sitting with: more than 85,000 industrial chemicals are registered for use in the U.S.

Most of them have never been tested for their effects on our health.

These chemicals end up in the products we use every day, from cleaning supplies and cosmetics to food packaging and furniture. Yet under current U.S. law, chemicals can stay on the market without proof that they’re safe.

That matters for breast cancer prevention. A growing body of research links exposure to certain chemicals with increased breast cancer risk, which means reducing harmful exposures is one of the most powerful prevention tools we have.

That’s why at BCPP we work on securing stronger chemical safety laws that put health first. Prevention shouldn’t be left to chance.

🥳 Let’s celebrate an amazing win for California!

Did you know that 80% of receipts are coated with the hormone-disrupting chemical BPA? The same chemical we all know to avoid in plastic bottles.

But now, thanks to Breast Cancer Prevention Partners, Assemblymember Catherine Stefani Catherine Stefani, and all of you who took action to ask the governor to sign this bill — AB 1604 is going to pass into law.

That means within the next couple of years, BPA and all bisphenols will be banned from receipt paper in the state of California.

👏 We are protecting millions of Californians, especially the retail and restaurant workers who touch receipts every single day, from getting BPA onto their hands and into their bloodstream.
