🎉 Two of our bills just cleared a major hurdle! Our Safer Food Packaging Act (AB 1148) and Prohibiting Bisphenols in Receipts Act (AB 1604) passed the Senate Environmental Quality Committee, 7-0 and 5-0, respectively.

Our policy team traveled to Sacramento today to testify in support of these two health-protective bills.

You’ve probably heard about the lawsuits over benzene contamination in CeraVe products.

Benzene is most likely a contaminant of benzoyl peroxide, which is added to products to treat acne. So, you probably won’t find benzene on an ingredient label.

But when we scanned several CeraVe products, we found something else worth talking about: parabens.

Parabens are synthetic preservatives found in the majority of beauty and personal care products. They’re also endocrine disruptors — meaning they can mimic estrogen in the body.

There is a strong link between parabens and breast cancer. Studies have detected parabens in 99% of breast tumour samples analysed.

✅ Our top tip? Stop hunting for benzene on labels. Start choosing paraben-free beauty and personal care products instead.

BIG NEWS 🚨 New federal legislation just introduced would ban cancer-causing chemicals — including PFAS, BPA, benzene, formaldehyde, and asbestos — from the food packaging Americans use every single day.

The No Toxic Chemicals in Food Packaging Act, introduced by Rep. Jan Schakowsky and Sen. Richard Blumenthal, would finally hold the FDA accountable to a promise Congress first made in 1958: that known carcinogens have no place in materials that touch our food.

Every time you unwrap a sandwich or heat up leftovers, you shouldn’t have to worry about what’s leaching into your meal. This legislation would change that.

Phthalates don’t stop at the placenta. These hormone-disrupting chemicals — found in food packaging, personal care products, vinyl flooring, fragrances, and more — have been detected in the bodies of pregnant people and their unborn babies.

That means exposure doesn’t begin at birth. For many of us, it begins before we take our first breath.

🔬 Phthalates cross the placenta, reaching the developing fetus during critical windows of growth
🔬 They’ve been detected in breast milk, extending exposure into infancy
🔬 Prenatal exposure has been linked to early breast development in girls (itself a known risk factor for breast cancer later in life)

Pregnant people are rarely told that the lotion they’re using, the food packaging they’re handling, or the floor they’re walking on may be exposing their baby to chemicals linked to hormone disruption.

However, you can make individual swaps to help reduce your exposure.

But the best way to protect everyone, including people who can’t afford to replace every product in their home, is to get phthalates out of everyday products entirely.

That’s why BCPP is co-sponsoring AB 1148, California’s Safer Food Packaging Act, which would ban bisphenols and phthalates from food packaging.
