Art therapy is an effective mental health treatment for individuals during times of crisis, changes in circumstance, trauma, and grief. Art therapy can be helpful for individuals of all ages and abilities.

There is no right or wrong way to create in an art therapy session. To achieve your therapeutic goals, our focus will be on self-expression and the process of creating. Art therapy techniques are used to help you improve awareness through sensory processing and regulating the nervous system. Upon reflection, you will have the opportunity to connect cognitive insight and make effective, lasting changes.

Ashley provides art therapy and is accepting new clients! Call 605-271-5640 to schedule.

Feeling anxious, overwhelmed, or disconnected? Try grounding.

When we experience anxiety, chronic stress, or trauma, it's common to feel disconnected—not only from the present moment, but from our bodies as well.

Grounding is a simple therapeutic practice that helps bring your attention back to the here and now by engaging your senses. These techniques can help quiet anxious thoughts, regulate your nervous system, and reconnect you with the present moment.

Here are a few of our favorite grounding exercises:

🌱 Walk outdoors barefoot and notice the sensation of the grass, sand, or earth beneath your feet.

💧 Place your hands in water. Pay attention to the temperature and how the water feels against your skin.

🌸 Savor a favorite scent, such as fresh flowers, essential oils, coffee, or tea.

👂 Pause and listen. What sounds do you notice around you? Birds? Wind? Traffic? A fan? Try to identify as many as you can.

🪨 Pick up an object nearby. Notice its texture, temperature, weight, shape, and color. Challenge yourself to describe it in as much detail as possible.

Grounding doesn't make difficult emotions disappear—but it can help you reconnect with your body, calm your nervous system, and find your footing in the present moment.

Which grounding technique works best for you? Let us know in the comments.
