(334)

So much of what we love about life is taken in through our eyes. Eyes are beautiful, and there are too many stunning things to see and experience to let glasses and contacts get in your way. Each year thousands of patients come to Dr. Jason P. Brinton seeking what we call visual freedom, or crisp, clear vision free of glasses and contact lenses. We accomplish this through LASIK and its six variations – SMILE, EVO ICL, PRK, Kamra inlay, Custom Lens Replacement (CLR) and RxSight Light Adjustable Lens. So, which of these procedures may be right for you? Call us at 314.375.2020. We will be happy to set up your Brinton Vision Ocular Analysis where you will meet one of our doctors who specialize in LASIK and vision correction surgery and see how we can help you achieve visual freedom.

Will LASIK change your eye color or appearance?
No. LASIK, SMILE, and PRK reshape the cornea without changing the iris, which determines your eye color. EVO ICL and Custom Lens Replacement also preserve your natural eye color.

Clearer vision. Same eyes.

Some people are not hiring vision correction to fix today.

They are hiring it so today does not box in tomorrow.

That is a real job, and EVO ICL is built for it. Because the collamer lens is additive rather than corneal reshaping, it can be removed or exchanged as life changes - a significant prescription shift, newer lens technology, or cataract surgery years from now.

The lens does not bond to the eye's natural structures. When cataracts eventually show up, it can be exchanged for a cataract lens implant, often coordinated within a single surgical plan.

Planning forward is a legitimate reason to ask. Start with a Brinton Vision Ocular Analysis.

The worry underneath most vision correction questions is not "will it work."

It is "what if I want to undo it."

That is a fair thing to sit with. Permanent is a big word.

Here is the structural answer for EVO ICL: the collamer lens is additive. It sits behind the iris, and it does not reshape or remove corneal tissue. A qualified ophthalmologist can remove or exchange it later - most often for a life event like cataract surgery down the road.

Removal is still surgery, with its own considerations. But the door stays open.

A Brinton Vision Ocular Analysis is where you find out what actually fits your eyes.

You asked: “Is LASIK actually a medical procedure — or is it cosmetic?”

Here’s the honest answer: it’s medical.

LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists to correct diagnosed refractive errors — nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism. The FDA regulates the lasers as Class III medical devices, the same category as pacemakers and cochlear implants. During the procedure a thin flap is created in the cornea so the laser can reshape the tissue causing the refractive error.

Cosmetic procedures change appearance without fixing a functional deficit. LASIK corrects the optical error itself.

Your insurer calls it elective — but elective means you choose the timing, not that the need isn’t real.

Myth: LASIK is a cosmetic procedure.

Here’s what’s actually true.

LASIK is performed by ophthalmologists — physicians with full medical degrees and surgical training — to correct diagnosed refractive errors: myopia, hyperopia, astigmatism. Those are recognized medical conditions that impair functional vision.

The FDA classifies LASIK lasers as Class III medical devices. That’s the same regulatory category as pacemakers and cochlear implants.

Cosmetic procedures alter appearance without correcting a functional deficit. LASIK does the opposite — it corrects the optical error that lenses only compensate for. A dental crown on a cracked tooth improves appearance too. Nobody calls it cosmetic surgery.

The convenience of not reaching for glasses is a byproduct. Not the goal.

“I can’t justify it. Glasses already work.”

That’s the objection. It deserves an honest answer.

Glasses do work — the way a workaround works. Every corrective lens compensates for the eye’s optical error rather than correcting the underlying cause, and that compensation carries real costs that compound over years: discomfort, inconvenience, and a daily task that never ends.

Contacts carry documented health risks — corneal ulcers, microbial keratitis, progressive dry eye. CDC data links sleeping in contacts to a 6 to 8 times higher infection risk compared with taking them out daily.

Your insurer calls LASIK elective. Elective means you choose the timing — not that the medical need is absent. Knee replacements are elective too.

Before you pick a surgeon, learn to spot the one thing that separates a diagnostic practice from a sales floor.

Ask this: does candidacy get decided by testing — or by a conversation?

A practice worth your eyes will:
• Run a full diagnostic workup before recommending anything — Brinton Vision starts every evaluation with the BVOA, an extensive assessment to determine candidacy
• Offer more than one path (LASIK, SMILE, EVO ICL, Custom Lens Replacement) and be willing to route you away from the one you walked in asking about
• Be led by an ophthalmologist — a physician with a full medical degree and surgical training

The red flag is a room where the answer arrives before the testing does.
