“I’ve been dancing since I was four years old. I know when something isn’t right with my body.”

After years of severe hip pain, internationally acclaimed dancer and Ballet Theatre of Toledo Artistic Director Nigel Burgoine knew it was time to seek expert care. The pain had begun affecting not only his dancing, but also his ability to teach and demonstrate movements for his students.

What began as a heart attack became a powerful reminder of the critical importance of stroke awareness.

While recovering in the hospital, Heather, who is also a ProMedica nurse, began showing signs of a stroke. It was her mom, recognizing the symptoms and knowing what to look for, who immediately alerted the care team. That moment of awareness changed everything.

That quick action set a life-saving chain of events into motion. A stroke alert was activated, and within minutes, a highly skilled team restored blood flow, reopening the blocked artery in less than 4 minutes!

ProMedica physicians Dr. Shanna Elston and Dr. Robert Roether coordinated to perform the first single anesthesia bronchoscopy dye marking and resection procedure in the region. This advanced treatment utilizes the ION and DaVinci surgical suite, with two surgical teams working together to treat a patient with lung cancer. This treatment is changing the landscape of lung cancer treatment for qualified patients.
