BOARD MEMBER HIGHLIGHT

James Supina - Vicechair

Jim is a member of St. Mary Parish in Mio, where he serves as a lector, usher, Eucharistic minister, member of the Our Lady of the Woods Shrine committee, and chair of the Shrine scholarship committee. He holds a bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Detroit and a master’s degree in engineering from Northwestern University, and is retired from Mascotech and the Ford Motor Company.

Jim and his wife, Chris, have four children and four grandchildren. Outside of his family life, Jim enjoys youth education, natural resource conservation, and all outdoor activities. He is currently a member of the Pigeon River Advisory Council, the vice-chairman of HeadWaters Land Conservancy, and active in other conservation-focused organizations.

Dr. Jaci MacMaster - Chairperson

Dr. Jaci MacMaster is a dedicated family physician and board member who lives in Harrisville on her husband’s family Centennial Farm. Her medical career includes providing leadership in the treatment and evaluation of child abuse at the NE Michigan Child Advocacy Center and volunteering as a medical consultant for the diocese’s Natural Family Planning programs.

Beyond her practice, Dr. Jaci is an active community volunteer, serving as a 4-H leader, Safe Sitter instructor, and supporter of local school programs. A committed member of St. Anne’s Parish, she also advocates for open adoption, having personally experienced the CHS adoption program.

Crawford Partnership to End Substance Misuse Connects with Families at Neighborhood Connect

The Crawford Partnership to End Substance Misuse (CPESM) recently participated in Neighborhood Connect, a community event focused on bringing local organizations together to connect families with valuable resources and services.

The event provided a great opportunity to strengthen community partnerships, including meeting several colleagues in person after previously connecting only through virtual meetings. Throughout the day, CPESM shared prevention resources and educational materials with hundreds of families, helping connect community members to local supports and services. Attendees also enjoyed free meals provided by a food truck, creating a welcoming atmosphere for families to gather, learn, and connect.

Neighborhood Connect highlighted the importance of collaboration in building healthier communities. CPESM is grateful to the organizers, community partners, and everyone who attended for making the event such a success.

Raising Awareness About Overdose Risk Among Older Adults

The Crawford Partnership to End Substance Misuse recently joined Dr. David McGreaham for an important presentation at the Crawford County Commission on Aging, highlighting a growing but often overlooked public health concern: overdose among older adults.

During the presentation, Dr. McGreaham shared that adults ages 55 and older have the highest rate of overdose deaths. He discussed how medication misuse, including the use of multiple prescriptions, accidental misuse, and interactions between medications, can increase overdose risk. He also emphasized the importance of safely storing medications, regularly monitoring their use, and properly disposing of unused or expired medications to help prevent misuse and accidental overdoses.

The Crawford Partnership to End Substance Misuse was also on hand to provide free medication lock boxes, naloxone, and educational materials to attendees. These resources help individuals and families take simple, effective steps to improve medication safety and be prepared to respond in the event of an opioid overdose.

Thank you to Dr. McGreaham for sharing his expertise and helping raise awareness about this lifesaving topic. Through education and community partnerships, we can continue working together to reduce overdose risk and keep our communities safe.

Meet our CHS Board Member, Betsy Hardy, MSN, RN!

With nearly 30 years of nursing experience—specializing in perinatal-infant health, trauma-awareness, and community collaboration—Betsy brings a wealth of knowledge to our board. Currently, she works with the Benzie-Leelanau District Health Department to build vital nursing programs in area schools.

Outside of her professional work, Betsy is a proud community member and mother of five. We are so honored to have her dedication and expertise guiding Catholic Human Services.

Atlanta Students Leading Students Participate in Regional Summer Leadership Summit

This summer, members of the Atlanta Students Leading Students (SLS) chapter joined youth leaders from seven other SLS chapters across Northern Michigan for an inspiring Summer Leadership Summit in Ga***rd.

The summit brought together student leaders who share a common goal—making their schools and communities healthier, safer, and more connected. Throughout the day, students participated in interactive leadership activities, team-building exercises, and discussions focused on developing the skills needed to create positive change in their hometowns.

Representing Atlanta with pride, our students collaborated with peers from neighboring communities, exchanging ideas, learning from one another, and building lasting relationships. The summit provided an opportunity for participants to strengthen their leadership abilities while exploring new ways to engage their classmates in prevention, wellness, and community service initiatives during the upcoming school year.

Students took part in workshops that emphasized communication, collaboration, problem-solving, and planning successful youth-led events. They also discussed the importance of being positive role models and how student voices can make a meaningful impact in preventing substance misuse and promoting healthy choices among their peers.

"The best part of the summit was connecting with other students who are passionate about making a difference," shared one participant. "It was encouraging to see that we're all working toward similar goals in our communities."

The Atlanta Students Leading Students chapter returned home energized, inspired, and ready to put new ideas into action. As they prepare for the new school year, they look forward to planning activities that encourage leadership, promote healthy lifestyles, and strengthen school spirit.

A special thank you goes out to the organizers, advisors, and community partners who made this year's Summer Leadership Summit possible. Investing in youth leadership today helps build stronger, healthier communities for tomorrow.

Up North Prevention Inspires Healthy Choices at Alpena Family Fun Day

Up North Prevention had an amazing time taking part in another Family Fun Day hosted by the Alpena Family Resource Center! With over 200 local youth in attendance, the event was packed with energy, laughter, and hands-on activities that made learning important life lessons both exciting and memorable. Best of all, every participant walked away not only with new knowledge, but also with a sweet treat and a fun prize!

Up North Prevention is already looking forward to next year’s event, where they’ll continue inspiring young people to make smart choices, stay healthy, and build bright futures, all while having a great time.
