Teen Tuesday- 💜 First periods can bring a LOT of questions — and that’s completely normal.

In the first couple of years after starting periods, cycles are often still finding their rhythm. Some irregularity can be expected, but certain symptoms are worth checking in about.

This guide can help teens and parents know what’s common, what’s not, and when it may be time to talk with a healthcare provider.

Most importantly:
✨ No question is embarrassing.
✨ Period health is health.
✨ We’d always rather you ask than sit at home worrying.

If you ever have concerns about periods, hormones, pain, heavy bleeding, or cycle changes, we are here to help.

🎉 Introducing Teen Tuesday from TVP Adolescent Clinic! 🎉

Raising tweens and teens comes with a lot of questions—and sometimes even more opinions. 😅

That’s why we’re bringing Teen Tuesday to Facebook!

Each Tuesday, we’ll share information, tips, and conversations about topics that matter to today’s preteens, teens, and the adults who care about them. From mental health and friendships to sleep, nutrition, social media, school stress, and more, we’re here to help families navigate the teen years with confidence.

Our goal is simple: provide reliable, judgment-free information that helps start important conversations at home.

💬 Have a topic you’d like us to cover? Drop it in the comments!

Follow along each week and join us for Teen Tuesday—because growing up doesn’t come with a manual, but you don’t have to figure it out alone.

☀️School’s out and summer fun is here! ☀️

We can’t wait to see all of your adventures, vacations, pool days, and outdoor playtime this season. As your pediatric team, we love seeing kids outside staying active, exploring, and making memories!

Before the summer fun begins, let’s make sure those sweet little faces and precious skin are protected and ready for all the sunshine ahead! 🧴🕶️🌴

The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends specific sun protection guidelines to keep infants and children safe from harmful UV rays!

☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️☀️

☀️Babies younger than 6 months should be protected and out of direct sunlight, shaded areas like umbrellas, shade tree or canopy in a stroller! Dressed in long sleeves, hats and sunnies. Make sure they don’t get overheated!

☀️Dress in light colors and lightweight clothing. Think loose, breathable fabrics - PFG, etc. type clothing.

☀️Throw on a wide brim hat with those cute sunnies to keep our nose and ears shaded as well!

☀️Choosing Sunscreen can be tricky! There’s so many out there!! You want to pick one with Broad Spectrum SPF (15+) and avoid products with the oxybenzone ingredient included. Choose a Mineral Sunscreen instead that contains zinc oxide or titanium dioxide! Okay, okay, this is starting to sound like science class. 🫠

Let’s Break it down to Brands We Love: Blue Lizard, Hello Bello, CereVe, Babyganics! You can find most of these at Walmart, Target, etc.

☀️ Apply sunscreen about 15-30 minutes before going outdoors and reapply every 2 hours!

We hope these tips help keep your family safe and protected while you enjoy a fun-filled summer making memories with friends and loved ones! ☀️

We’re are so excited to share that two of our providers have launched a new community podcast through Global Health Collaboration.🎙️💙

Meggin Tallman, CRNP and April Lawson, ALC work primarily through the TVP Adolescent Clinic. ďżź Although they care for a wide range of patients, their deep focus is our Healthy Futures program.

Created with a passion for education, advocacy, and community outreach, this podcast features conversations surrounding pediatric health, nutrition, mental wellness, preventive care, and the real-life challenges families face every day — both inside and outside the clinic walls.

As providers, they’ve seen firsthand how important accessible health education and community connection truly are, and this podcast is one more way they hope to serve families across North Alabama.

We’re proud to support providers who are passionate about improving the health and well-being of our community beyond the exam room.

For Mental Health Awareness Month, let’s remember that a child’s inner voice is often built from the words they hear every day. 💚

The way we speak to children matters more than we realize — encouragement becomes confidence, kindness becomes self-worth, and feeling heard becomes emotional strength.

As parents, caregivers, teachers, and healthcare providers, we all have the opportunity to help children build healthy minds, resilience, and confidence — one conversation at a time. 💚

Every day, our counselors show up with compassion, patience, and a deep commitment to helping children grow, heal, and thrive. 💛
They create safe spaces, build trust, and walk alongside kids and families through life’s challenges—big and small.

In honor of Mental Health Awareness Month, we celebrate the incredible work they do and the hearts they bring to it. And while some days are hard, they continue to show up with steady hearts and unwavering care.

You’ll find them caring for patients in our Behavioral Health Clinic, supporting Healthy Futures patients in our Adolescent Clinic, and providing full-time services at our local juvenile detention center—meeting kids where they are and when they need it most.

We are so grateful for the difference they make in the lives of the children and families we serve.

Happy Mother’s Day to every person who shows up with a mother’s heart.

To the moms, grandmothers, stepmoms, foster moms, adoptive moms, aunts, guardians, dads filling both roles, and every caregiver loving and raising children day after day — thank you.

Thank you for the snacks packed, the tears comforted, the appointments remembered, the late nights, early mornings, hard decisions, endless encouragement, and unconditional love. Childhood is shaped by the people who consistently show up, and we are grateful for all of you.

At Tennessee Valley Pediatrics, we are honored to partner with the incredible people helping children grow, heal, learn, and thrive every single day.

Happy Mother’s Day from all of us at Tennessee Valley Pediatrics.
