The math of a good day, from an A&M caregiver in Maine.
1 warm breakfast made — because the eggs are how she knows it's morning, and how he knows he's still home.
3 stories heard, remembered — the one about the fishing boat in '68, the one about the first grandchild, the one she's told a hundred times but tells like it's the first.
7 moments of dignity restored — a button buttoned, a spill cleaned before anyone noticed, a hand held on the way down the hall, a laugh at a joke that wasn't that funny, a warm washcloth, a favorite sweater, a moment of "I've got you."
1 quiet prayer whispered — not for show, not for anyone to hear. Just because the work is holy, and the person in the chair is somebody's whole world.
Add it up, and it doesn't look like much on paper. But this is the math we do every day in Maine. And it equals something no spreadsheet can measure — a life honored, a family at peace, a caregiver called.
"He that is faithful in that which is least is faithful also in much." — Luke 16:10 (KJV)
