Indoor air quality isn't just a well-being metric—it’s a matter of accessibility.

For millions living with chronic health conditions, shared indoor spaces pose an unseen risk. In a piece for The Mandarin, International WELL Building Institute - IWBI's Jack Noonan and The Safer Air Project's Plum Stone explain why clean air is vital, preventative healthcare.

We spend 90% of our lives indoors. Let's make sure those spaces are safe and inclusive for everyone.

People are the heart of every great company—and they represent nearly 90% of an organization's investment. When we look at ways to support employee performance and well-being, the most powerful shift is often the simplest: Designing spaces where people naturally feel their best.

As our President and CEO, Rachel Hodgdon, put it at Aspen Ideas: Health: "Healthy buildings are in many ways the holy grail for business performance."

When you focus on workplace essentials—fresher air, better lighting and comfortable temperatures—the impact speaks for itself. Research published in Building and Environment shows that employees in WELL Certified spaces report higher satisfaction with elements such as:
+ 16% connection to nature
+ 11% thermal comfort
+ 10% indoor air quality & movement

Investing in your space isn't an extra overhead cost—it's how you unlock the full value of your single largest investment. Better environments mean better performance, and that translates directly to the bottom line.

In the article, IWBI President and CEO Rachel Hodgdon helps put the emerging "longevity architecture" trend into context, noting that it reflects a deeper shift toward healthy homes grounded in science rather than amenities alone.

As building professionals continue to invest in longevity architecture, they're demonstrating that designing for well-being isn't simply an amenity—it's becoming a source of value, differentiation and long-term resilience.

As interest in healthy homes continues to grow, independent verification helps distinguish measurable outcomes from marketing claims, giving homeowners, developers and investors greater confidence that their investments will deliver meaningful results.

Indoor air quality monitoring takes the guesswork out of HVAC operations by using real-time data. With this gain in efficiency, buildings report fewer complaints, less sick leave and improved productivity from the people inside.

As one of our many partners leading innovative solutions for healthy buildings, uHoo shared their story with us at our Summit in Tokyo. Their recent client success stories across Asia reinforced the same conclusion every time: Healthy buildings and energy efficient buildings are not trade-offs. In reality, data shows the two reinforce each other.

Consider implementing research-backed WELL strategies in order to meet your organization's environmental goals while also improving the well-being of your people.

We're excited to announce that WeWork has committed to pursuing the WELL Coworking Rating across more than 300 locations spanning five continents—the largest commitment to an evidence-based health framework by a coworking operator to date.

As flexible work continues to evolve, people are looking for more than convenience and flexibility. They expect workplaces that support their health, well-being and overall experience, wherever they choose to work.

Developed by the International WELL Building Institute in collaboration with The Instant Group, the WELL Coworking Rating provides coworking operators with an evidence-based roadmap to advance health through operational policies, workplace experience and design. WeWork's commitment reflects a growing recognition across the industry that healthier workspaces aren't just good for people—they're becoming a defining part of workplace quality.

Congratulations to the WeWork team on this important milestone. We look forward to supporting the journey ahead and continuing to raise the bar for healthier, more people-first flexible workspaces around the world.

We're celebrating World Listening Day by highlighting two WELL projects that use sound creatively during peoples' workdays, attuning them to nature's outdoor symphony:

🌿 Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens installed a nature soundscape among trees and plants to warm up a cold gray concrete atrium. With help from a sound artist and composer who recorded nature sounds in Pittsburgh, Pa., across every season and weather condition, recordings are piped into the atrium based on the current season. This allows employees and visitors passing through the space to enjoy both the lush plants and the sounds of outdoor weather and creatures.

🦉 GSK, a pharmaceutical company, deployed nature-based soundscapes throughout its London headquarters, including bird song and running water. On the working floors, the sound of a babbling brook can mask distracting noises. Every half hour the sound of birds flying overhead fills the space. At 6:00 PM, owls hoot, signaling that it's time to go home and rest.

After weeks of excitement for soccer and futbol fans around the world, we wanted to celebrate the WELL journey behind one of the stadiums that hosted the tournament.

The WELL Health-Safety Rated Sofi Stadium in Los Angeles, Calif., hosted eight matches, including USA's opening match and last week's quarter-final between Spain and Belgium.

While passionate fans followed every goal, penalty kick and referee call, they were also experiencing the benefits of a WELL Health Safety Rated space. From optimized air and water quality, to safety protocols and emergency preparedness, they were surrounded by strategies that helped to ensure a healthier and safer fan experience.

"...What if the buildings we spend our lives in are actually making us sick? And what if we already know how to fix that?" Healthy buildings protect people from poor air quality and climate disasters like heat waves. In workplaces, healthy buildings have been shown to boost productivity and retain top talent—making it a no-brainer investment for any C-suite.

Last month at , IWBI President and CEO Rachel Hodgdon joined Dr. Joseph Allen, Director of the Harvard Healthy Buildings Program, and Diana Araoz-Fraser, Vice President of HKS Architects, to discuss how we can support healthier building and operational standards worldwide.

The discussion covers all this and more. Watch it here: https://www.youtube.com/live/emxLlARMi14?si=1zF2U2NlbliAEYp2
