Kidney stones affect approximately 1 in 9 Americans adults — and rates in children are climbing.

A final report for the PCORI-commissioned systematic review — Recurrent Nephrolithiasis in Adults and Children: Comparative Effectiveness of Preventive Medical Strategies — is now available.

This review examines evidence on medical approaches to help prevent kidney stones from recurring in both adults and children.

A PCORI-funded patient-centered CER study compared 2 non-drug treatments: mindfulness-based therapy (MBT) and cognitive-based therapy (CBT) to help adults with opioid-treated chronic low back pain reduce pain severity and opioid dose and improve quality of life.

After 1 year, the pragmatic randomized controlled trial found that adults receiving MBT and CBT had:
✔️ Improved pain levels and quality of life
✔️ Better ability to do daily activities
✔️ Reduced daily opioid medicine use

Older adults with complex healthcare needs — such as those living with multiple chronic conditions and functional limitations — often face gaps in care coordination, which could affect their health outcomes.

A PCORI-funded randomized controlled trial is comparing 2 approaches to determine which is more effective for older adults:

1️⃣ Structured annual wellness visits (AWVs) in primary care practice

2️⃣ Structured AWVs enhanced with Geriatrics Resources for the Assessment and Care of Elders (GRACE), an interprofessional care delivery model that includes facilitating co-management between the GRACE and primary care teams
