More than 2 million U.S. adults experience fragility fractures each year, and having one can increase the risk for another.

A PCORI-funded randomized controlled trial is comparing two approaches to help prevent future fractures:

1️⃣ Augmented-Fracture Liaison Service: Patients receive education from a patient navigator and have telehealth appointments with a bone health clinician
2️⃣ Enhanced usual care: Patients receive educational materials encouraging them to follow up with their primary care physicians, who are notified about patients at higher risk, and receive information about guideline-recommended fracture care

A recent edition of PCORI’s Emerging Health Care Innovation Brief features FDA approval of treatments for locally advanced or metastatic breast cancer and Alexander disease. This issue also highlights FDA approval of a dual-energy catheter device for complex or challenging atrial fibrillation.

Other developments to watch include 2 FDA approvals for:
◼️ Nipocalimab (Imaavy) to treat warm autoimmune hemolytic anemia.
◼️ Rusfertide (Mimrylo) to treat polycythemia vera, a rare blood cancer.

A breast cancer called ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS) makes up about 25% of new diagnoses and may or may not turn into invasive cancer. To treat DCIS, women often opt for breast-conserving surgery. During the surgery, their clinicians may remove just the tumors or also remove some lymph nodes to perform biopsies.

A PCORI-funded patient-centered CER study compared outcomes for women who did or did not receive biopsies during their surgeries.

Women who had the biopsies were more likely to have certain short-term side effects than women who didn’t, as well as long-term swelling. There were no differences between the groups in infections, pain or fluid buildup nor in the cancer spreading or how long the patients lived.

PCORI released an Evidence Update on treatment options for genitourinary syndrome of menopause (GSM) — a term that describes a variety of symptoms caused by hormonal changes affecting quality of life for many women during and after menopause.

A review of available research from nearly 70 studies on GSM showed that some treatments may help to improve certain symptoms, while others may not.

Today, PCORI brought together maternal health leaders, advocates, and policymakers for a roundtable discussion featuring researchers and community partners from PCORI-funded Maternal Health Partner Projects.

Maternal Health Partner Projects require community organizations to serve as full partners throughout the research process. Each project is jointly led by a principal investigator (PI) from a research organization and a PI from a community organization, who share leadership and decision-making responsibilities.
