In many South African homes, addiction is the secret that everyone knows and nobody names. We don't talk about it at the dinner table. We don't mention it at church. And so people die in the silence we built to protect our "reputation" - as if no one can see what is obvious.

Recovery isn’t just about stopping a behaviour like substance use or self-harm. It’s also about rebuilding your sense of self. For many people, that core rebuilding process collides head-on with a deeply ingrained habit: people-pleasing. What starts as a survival strategy in childhood or early adulthood, prioritising others’ needs to avoid conflict, gain approval, or maintain safety, can become a silent relapse trigger in recovery. Constantly saying ‘yes,’ suppressing your own needs, or fearing that setting boundaries will lead to abandonment can keep you stuck in cycles of resentment, burnout, and emotional relapse.

When you’re recovering, self-care isn’t optional; it’s essential. But when you’ve spent years prioritising others, putting yourself first can feel wrong, selfish, or even dangerous. That’s why healing from people-pleasing isn’t just about saying ‘no’ more often; it’s about relearning your worth from within, not from external validation.

Steps 2 and 3 open the door to something bigger than willpower. Faith, not in religion, but in the possibility of healing. Steps 4–9 guide us to look honestly at our patterns, make amends, and begin to repair what’s broken. And Steps 10–12? They’re about showing up, day after day, not because you’re perfect, but because you’re *human.*

As God begins to elevate your life, not everyone around you will celebrate it with a sincere heart. Some people are uncomfortable with the favor, growth, or peace they see on you.

But you are not left unprotected in the middle of that. God sees every hidden intention and stands between you and what was meant to harm you.

Keep moving forward without fear. What God is building in your life is covered by His protection and guided by His hand.

“I will guard you from those who cannot bear to see you succeed—those who wish you harm.”

The power of choice

Upon entering treatment , a common excuse resounds, “I will never use again , I am clean now , I just want my freedom.”
We have no choice in active addiction. In recovery , we learn to live a life , have a life, and heal . In that journey we are, eventually, given back our ability to choose.

It is easy to believe the construct of what we believe freedom to be. We hardly know freedom, if at all. That is what makes quitting sobriety easy ! We have never felt how free letting go is.

Recovery transforms perspective, challenges flawed belief systems, helps us understand where we are headed.

It is hard for us to ask for help. Admitting we need it is the first step .

Freedom is the WE, because we came to believe. Not a single person has it all figured out . That is as arrogant as stating that we have it made . We are fixed . We are recovered.

If you've ever paid your son's dealer to 'keep him safe' - this is for you.

Last year a Benoni mom paid R3 800 to stop her 22-year-old's dealer from 'making an example of him'. She thought she was saving his life. Really, she was paying someone to keep her son sick.

When she stopped, he finally felt the pain that pushed him into rehab.

True support isn't about preventing pain - it's about refusing to remove the consequences that create change.

Save this so you can spot your own enabling patterns before they cost another month of your loved one's life.

What's one 'help' you gave that you're now realising kept the addiction alive?
