The plaque for the Torrens Island Internment Camp discussed in our January 2017 Gangway Bulletin has been removed from its rock base alongside the Torrens Island bridge. It was placed there opposite the entrance to them power station in 2009. My colleague 'Bahudhara' posted this photo of the plaque to Wikipedia: -

Day of the Seafarer is held annually on 25th June. According to https://www.imo.org/en/about/events/pages/day-of-the-seafarer-2026.aspx "This year, the Day of the Seafarer campaign will focus on revealing the realities of life at sea, highlighting the hardship, pressure and risks that seafarers can face. It will draw particular attention to the challenges of operating in high-risk and conflict-affected areas, while underscoring the essential role seafarers play in keeping the global economy moving.

The campaign will be built around the line: “Carrying world trade. Carrying the risks”. It reflects the fact that seafarers keep global trade moving, while often facing difficult and sometimes dangerous conditions. Their contribution is often out of sight, even though they are central to the movement of goods around the world.

The aim is for this year’s Day of the Seafarer to not only recognize seafarers’ contribution but also acknowledge the risks and sacrifices behind it.

The hashtag for this year will be "

An eSIM service called Saily provides users with a convenient way to access mobile data while travelling without the need for a physical SIM card. The app is designed to be user-friendly, allowing travellers to manage their data plans easily and switch between different plans as needed. An eSIM is a digital SIM that lets you switch carriers and use multiple mobile plans without swapping cards. Most new phones support eSIMs, and setting them up takes just a few taps.

Saily is a brand new eSIM service by the team behind NordVPN. Get an eSIM for hundreds of countries worldwide, and don’t lose connection when you need it most.

Today, 18th May, is International Day for Women in Maritime. The day is celebrating women’s contributions and promoting gender equality in the maritime industry.

(The International Day for Women in Maritime was established by the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in 2021 and has been observed annually since 2022. In 2026, the day falls on May 18. Its purpose is to recognize the contributions of women across maritime professions, including seafaring, engineering, logistics, and leadership roles, while promoting gender equality, inclusion, and diversity in the sector.)

Happy Day for Women in Maritime!

Over 500,000 seafarers visit Australian ports each year. Seafarer centres services can be critical to seafarer well-being. They include emergency medical support and advocacy, rights support, provision of Wi-Fi and SIM cards, transport to shops and medical appointments, support for mental and physical well-being, faith-based services, and currency exchange.
