Up to 80% of Australians have HSV1 (typically known for cold sores), and 1 in 8 have HSV2 (typically ge***ally). Cold sores often aren’t thought of as herpes, as it does not hold the same stigma - simply because it’s not in an intimate area!

Both facial and ge***al herpes have a few things in common:
- They are from the same herpetic viral family; however HSV1 and HSV2 can behave slightly differently in terms of recurrency and transmission
- Can be triggered by things like getting sick, a fever or tissue trauma such as sunburn
- Often resurface in the same spot most of the time, though it can occasionally appear somewhere new
- Symptoms can include blisters, ulcerations, burning, tingling and pain

There are other symptoms of ge***al herpes that you may not read about online, such as urethritis (swelling of the urethra), stinging or burning when urinating and swelling of the v***a or l***a.

Everyone's experience with herpes is genuinely different, which is why it can be hard to find your specific story in online threads.

If you're looking for accurate, shame-free information and support, you're in the right place. My herpes guide is now available via the link in my bio!

If you have ADHD and notice your symptoms getting significantly worse before your period, harder to focus, more emotionally reactive, medication feeling less effective, you may have PMDD!

Research shows more than 40% of people with ADHD also experience PMDD and the two conditions overlap as both involve dopamine and serotonin regulation. When oestrogen drops in the luteal phase, it can send ADHD symptoms into overdrive.

If your experience of ADHD symptoms becomes significantly worse before your period, harder to focus, more emotionally reactive, medication feeling less effective, it may be worth understanding PMDD.

Naturopathic appointments available every week.

This one surprises a lot of people, as you may have assumed ‘everything’ was looked at when you complete an STI screening. Whilst herpes is incredibly common, it is not typically automatically included and if you want to know, it’s best to double check and ask.

Blood pathology screening or ge***al swab screening is not provided automatically for 3 reasons:

1 - The herpes virus will only test positive on a ge***al swab IF it’s actually present - so if there is no viral load present, there is nothing for the swab to pick up. If you are ever concerned your symptoms may be herpes, it is always best to have a swab completed whilst they are present.

2 - Blood pathology is identifying if any antibodies exist. Herpes antibodies take time to develop your first exposure to HSV - so if you have been recently exposed, this is not a sure way to identify STIs.

3 - Over 80% of the population have antibodies to HSV1, typically from having cold sores at some point through their life, although more recently statistically ge***al HSV1 is increasing.

Knowing how and when to test and understanding what your results actually mean, is part of becoming empowered with your sexual health taking your sexual health seriously and that starts with having the right information.

I hear this one a lot….. “You're too young for perimenopause" and that's exactly what makes it so easy to miss!!

Perimenopause isn't reserved for your late 40s or 50s, it can begin in your late 30s, often years before most people even think to consider it.

If you're in your late 30s or early 40s and you've noticed your cycle change, v.ginal dryness, your mood feeling less steady than usual or your sleep becoming irregular for no clear reason, it's worth paying attention. These early shifts are often the first real clue that you could be going into perimenopause.

Did you know it could start this early? At Botanical Abundance, I offer evidence-based, compassionate naturopathic support for hormonal and intimate wellbeing, helping you live comfortably and confidently in your body ✨

Our bodies move through many different chapters across a lifetime and one that often isn’t spoken about enough is perimenopause.

Perimenopause can begin as early as the late 30’s, though more commonly in the early 40’s. It’s the transition phase leading up to menopause, where hormone patterns begin to shift, often in ways that can feel confusing or unpredictable.

One of the key changes during this time is that progesterone may start to fluctuate and decline earlier, while oestrogen can rise and fall more erratically before eventually decreasing.

There’s a lot of fear and misinformation around HSV… HSV cannot be passed on from a toilet seat, towel or sharing everyday items.

HSV (herpes simplex virus) is a virus that does not survive long outside the body. Once it leaves living skin cells, it quickly becomes inactive. That means it isn’t spread through surfaces or objects.

Transmission happens through direct skin-to-skin contact, typically when the virus is active in a specific area. You are not contagious 24/7, and it’s not “all over your body.”

Understanding this matters because a lot of the stigma around HSV comes from fear that simply isn’t grounded in how the virus actually behaves.

Follow along if you’re interested in more evidence-based naturopathic support for HSV and intimate health.

Most of us are taught to view BV and HSV as two seperate infections but there is a connection! Research shows that individuals who are HSV-2 positive tend to have higher rates of BV and this isn’t a coincidence.

BV shifts the balance of the v.ginal microbiome, reducing protective lactobacillus species and increasing inflammatory bacteria. This creates an environment that’s more susceptible to irritation, viral activity and recurrent outbreaks.

It can become a cycle and this is why the v.ginal microbiome isn’t just about managing symptoms. If this is something you’ve been dealing with, there are ways to approach it beyond short-term fixes. You deserve to live happily in your body!

22/05/2026

Our v.ginal good bacteria, Lactobacilli, are incredibly important to maintain a healthy environment, reduce inflammation and reduce the likelihood of infections (uti's, BV etc) but for some individuals it is possible for Lactobacilli to become overgrown and cause symptoms similar to thrush, such as itching, burning, thicker white discharge. This can be referred to as CV (cytolytic vaginosis). This is why working with a practitioner to complete v.ginal microbiome testing is so important, to actually identify what is happening in the ecosystem.
