People like James often don’t have anyone else they can turn to when things get tough, but this time he had you.

After spending eight years caring for his late mother and living with his own complex health conditions James has been hit hard by the increased cost of living.

During a home visit, James revealed to his Silverchain social worker Jacinta that he was struggling to afford both his medications and weekly groceries.

Thanks to donations to Silverchain Foundation, Jacinta could offer James a one-off grocery voucher to help him get through this very tough time.

Jacinta said it was wonderful to see the visible relief come over James when she gave him the voucher, and she is very grateful to the donors who made it possible.

Donations to Silverchain Foundation provide support for some of our most vulnerable clients who have no-one else to turn to in their time of greatest need.

Clients from our Pendana Social Centre recently went to Perth Zoo for a day of wildlife adventures - learning all about the animals, conservation and the Zoo’s history.

From the Penguins and Reptile Encounter to the Zebra Car Safari and a wildlife scavenger hunt, there was plenty to see and do!

This week is Include a Charity Week, a time to celebrate the amazing impact that Australians make every day through leaving a gift in their Wills. It can also be an opportunity to consider your own legacy.

After considering your loved ones, leaving a gift in your Will is a powerful way to help create positive impact for future generations in line with your own values.

By leaving a gift in your Will to Silverchain Foundation you can help invest in new technologies like smart glasses, a device that makes specialist consultations for regional and remote clients possible from the comfort of home, or fund new research to reduce unplanned hospitalisations for older Australians.

It can also help us deliver programs such as our virtual Lunch Club which is tackling loneliness for people who live remotely or are who are unable to easily leave their homes.

Our next sessions will be held in Mandurah, Inglewood, Bunbury, and Forrestfield, providing more opportunities to learn, ask questions and connect with our team.

Fremantle Social Centre went back in time last week, hosting a 90s-themed disco! Clients dressed to impress and hit the dance floor, dancing along to all the best 90s tunes spun by DJ Harry.

There were themed treats, party poppers, bubbles and even a photo booth, but the best part was seeing some of our clients living with dementia become so animated and joyful as the music played.

Mental wellbeing doesn’t have an age limit.

Through Silverchain’s EMBED program, Mary has shared her experiences to help improve support for older Australians.

Her story is a reminder that staying connected, feeling heard and looking after your mental health are important at every stage of life.

In welcome news for older Australians, the Federal Government today has announced that the Commonwealth Home Support Program (CHSP) will be retained as a vital part of the aged care system.

CHSP is the entry point for many older people to aged care. It provides supports such as cleaning, shopping, meals on wheels, transport, home maintenance, social support and allied health.

Silverchain advocated for CHSP to continue as a distinct, strengthened, and block-funded aged care program, not rolled into Support at Home.

This is welcomed news for so many, but we will continue to advocate for a stronger, sustainably funded CHSP with a greater focus on prevention, reablement and social connection, while ensuring people can move seamlessly to Support at Home as their needs become more complex.

Last week, our Fremantle Social Centre hosted students from Fremantle College and The Studio School, who interviewed six of our long-time Fremantle clients as part of the City of Fremantle’s Map of Memories project. It was a wonderful intergenerational exchange, with young people learning from the lived experiences of an older generation and helping preserve their stories for generations to come.
