🔧 “So… what actually happens during a chiropractic adjustment?”
It is one of the most common questions chiropractors hear - usually right before someone says, “Wait, is it going to crack?” 😅
A chiropractic adjustment is a precise, controlled movement applied to a joint, most often in the spine. Chiropractors use their hands or specialised instruments to apply a gentle force designed to improve joint motion and reduce restriction.
Sometimes you may hear a popping sound. That sound is not bones “cracking” or slipping back into place. It is thought to come from tiny gas bubbles rapidly changing pressure within the joint fluid - a process called cavitation. Much like opening a fizzy drink, but considerably less sticky.
The theory behind spinal adjustments centres on how joints, muscles and the nervous system work together. When joints become stiff or restricted, surrounding muscles may tighten and movement patterns can change. The body may compensate elsewhere, sometimes leading to tension, discomfort or reduced mobility.
An adjustment aims to restore more normal joint movement. Researchers also believe adjustments may influence the nervous system by stimulating receptors in joints and muscles. This can affect muscle tone, movement control and pain perception. The effects are not simply mechanical. The body is constantly processing information from joints, muscles, balance systems and nerves. Chiropractic care looks at how those systems interact during movement and posture. 🧠
That said, chiropractic care is not a magic “click and fix”. Good care often includes advice around movement, exercise, posture, recovery and lifestyle habits as well.
