Tansi relatives,

A gentle note about Indigenous-focused oriented therapy: it is always guided by the relatives and community members I walk alongside.

Some relatives want to bring ceremony, prayer, medicines, or teachings into the space.
Some relatives want a steady, trauma-informed approach that honours identity and lived experience without naming specific cultural practices.

Both are valid.

Our work is about consent, cultural safety, and walking alongside you in a way that fits who you are and what you need right now.

We offer virtual care across Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories, with in-person options in Calgary. Free 15-minute consults are available.

Tansi relatives,

Indigenous-focused oriented therapy is about more than coping skills.

It is a culturally anchored way of healing that honours:

1) your story and lived experience
2) your body and nervous system
3) your spirit and values
4) your relationships and community supports

You do not have to leave your culture at the door to get support.

If you are looking for culturally safe therapy in Calgary or virtually across Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories, you are welcome here.

Indigenous-focused oriented therapy is a culturally anchored approach that supports healing while honouring identity, community, and lived experience.

In practice, this means we make space for:
- story and meaning-making
- nervous system regulation and trauma-informed care
- values, spirit, and cultural connection (in a respectful, person-guided way)
- relationships, boundaries, and community supports

Cultural safety is not a nice-to-have. It is part of ethical, effective care.

We offer virtual care across Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories, with in-person options in Calgary. Free 15-minute consults are available.

Tansi relatives,

I’m starting a gentle series on Indigenous-focused oriented therapy: what it is, what it is not, and how it can support healing in a way that honours culture, story, spirit, and safety.

In my practice, Indigenous-focused work is not about “adding culture on top” of therapy. It’s about walking alongside you with a two-eyed seeing approach, and making space for what your body, spirit, ancestors, and lived experience already know.

If you’ve ever felt unseen or misunderstood in mental health care, you’re not alone. You deserve culturally safe support.

If you’d like, book a free 15-minute consult to see if we’re a good fit.

Available in Calgary and virtually across Alberta, BC, Saskatchewan, and the Northwest Territories.

Building New Neural Pathways: The Dopamine Connection

Depression and anxiety carve deep grooves in our thinking. Our brains get stuck in patterns of worry, shame, and pain. But the brain is not fixed, it's plastic, always capable of change.

Physical activity increases dopamine and creates more dopamine receptors in your brain. Over time, consistent movement literally rewires your brain to feel better. This isn't motivation, it's neuroscience.

In our teachings, we speak of the importance of choice and agency. Every time you move your body, you're exercising your power to change your own story. You're proving to yourself that you can shift what feels stuck.

The path forward doesn't require perfection. It requires showing up, again and again, with gentleness and intention. Your brain is listening. Your body is ready. 🧠✨

The Body Carries Wisdom: Movement as Medicine

In our teachings, we understand the body as a sacred vessel, not separate from the mind or spirit, but deeply interconnected. When we move, we honour this connection.

Science confirms what our ancestors knew: physical movement releases endorphorphins, dopamine, and serotonin, the same neurochemicals that ease depression and anxiety. A single session of aerobic activity can shift your brain chemistry just as powerfully as medication.

The Medicine Wheel teaches us balance across all four directions. Moving your body is one way to tend to the physical direction of your wellness.

Whether it's a walk in nature, dancing, or gentle stretching, your body is always ready to support your healing. 🌿

Lowering the Stress Load: When Movement Quiets the Storm

Our bodies hold stress like water in a vessel. When we carry trauma, grief, or ongoing pressure, our cortisol levels stay elevated, keeping us in a constant state of alert, even when we're safe.

Physical activity is one of the most powerful ways to lower cortisol and calm your nervous system. Research shows that regular exercise reduces stress hormones and helps your body return to balance.

In our teachings, we speak of finding calm in the storm. Movement is how we teach our bodies that the danger has passed. A walk, a swim, even gentle movement tells your nervous system: *You are safe now.*

This is not about pushing hard. It's about consistent, gentle motion that honours where you are today. 💙

Rest and Recovery: The Other Half of Healing

We often talk about movement, but healing requires balance. Just as the Medicine Wheel teaches us the importance of all four directions, our bodies need both activity and rest.

Physical activity improves sleep quality, and sleep is where the real healing happens. During sleep, your brain consolidates memories, processes emotions, and repairs itself. Exercise helps regulate your circadian rhythm and deepen your rest.

When you move during the day, you're not just shifting your chemistry in that moment. You're setting the stage for deeper, more restorative sleep. You're giving your nervous system permission to truly relax.

This is the gift of honouring your body: movement by day, rest by night. Both are sacred. Both are necessary. 🌙💤

Over-functioning doesn't always look like falling apart.

Often it looks like being highly capable, until your body and spirit start waving a flag.

You might notice:
• You feel responsible for other people's emotions, choices, or healing
• You say "it's okay" when it isn't
• You're the one who checks in first, apologizes first, fixes first
• You feel guilty resting, even when you're exhausted
• You dread messages or phone calls (even from people you love)
• You feel irritable, numb, or shut down, and then feel bad about that too
• You keep going, but you don't feel like you anymore

If any of this lands, it doesn't mean you're failing.

It may mean you've been carrying too much for too long. 🌿
